THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — GRENZSTEIN
GRENZSTEIN means "boundary stone," and the wave_5 settlers who chose it had spent their journey thinking about what they were doing, which is apparent in the name. They passed through four centuries of accumulated corridor civilization and decided they wanted to be one hop further. The name expresses this without decorating it.
The Forty Years
Wave 5 at hop 16. Eight thousand permanent residents, arriving with fewer than two thousand forty years ago. The settlement pattern is concentrated: a primary town around the horizon station access point and two smaller agricultural settlements on the more temperate plains. The architecture is practical and modifiable rather than permanent, because wave_5 settlements build for durability and revision — they know they do not yet know what they will need in a century.
The K0IV star is slightly evolved, running cooler and somewhat expanded than a younger star. The habitable primary world sits in the outer range of the habitable zone. The stellar light is warm but not intense. The vegetation has adapted photosynthetic systems to it. The settlers have spent forty years learning to read the weather patterns. They have mostly worked this out. The world takes time to learn and rewards the learning, which is a description that applies to the experience of being here more generally.
French is the dominant language, coming through Bout du Chemin. The Grenzstein dialect is already developing its own character. Linguists from the inner corridor would find it interesting. The community is building its identity in real time and would find the linguists' interest somewhat beside the point.
The Survey
Three years after founding, a geological assessment team in the secondary continent's highlands encountered structured surface features inconsistent with natural geological formation. The survey report describes them in careful, descriptive terms and recommends a more detailed survey before settlement or extraction in that zone. The more detailed survey has not been conducted. The coordinating council has the report and has not forwarded it to any outside institution. The highland zone remains unoccupied without any stated reason beyond low relative priority.
Three years after the initial finding, a second survey team passed through the same area and noted that the features described in the original report were no longer visible. The second report is also in the council's files. Neither report has been forwarded. The community has not settled the highland zone. No one has articulated exactly why.
Practical Information
Grenzstein is sixteen hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Bout du Chemin and Yttermark. Whether "boundary stone" means the last stone on this side of something or the first stone on the other side is a conversation Grenzstein has not finished having.
