THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — BRÜCKENAU
BRÜCKENAU is a through-route system named for a Bavarian river-valley village, settled by Franconian founding families who arrived, confirmed the terrain matched the survey — river valleys, lowland meadows, forested slopes — and planted hops.
The Beer
Talbräu Dunkelgold is an unfiltered Franconian farmhouse lager. The hops are local. The water is local. The yeast strain has been maintained continuously since founding. It is not a complex product in the way that premium artisanal products position themselves. It is honest and consistent and it tastes like what it is.
Transit crews transiting through Brückenau ask for it specifically. Some carry cases on departure. It has found its way into bar inventories two and three hops inward — not in great volume, but steadily, because crews keep requesting it and operators stock what crews request. This is how distribution works when there are no distribution agreements, which is also to say: better than most formal distribution agreements work.
The K7V star produces deep orange-red light, and the vegetation has adapted over two hundred years to absorb it efficiently, which means the cultivated valley floors have a russet cast in late growing season that visitors remark on. The settlement's main town, Waldbrück, has more transit-facing infrastructure than its population strictly requires. This is because crews given any reasonable excuse to stop rather than transit will stop for the beer, and the community built around that fact.
The Yeast
The Talbräu cooperative has maintained its founding yeast strain as proprietary culture for two hundred years and has successfully kept it out of external hands. What is not discussed is the strain's origin: the founders brought it from old Bavaria, which means from Earth, which means the cooperative's legal relationship to that genetic material — whether continuous maintenance constitutes original development or whether some Earth-side institution could make a prior claim — has never been tested. The cooperative does not raise the question because raising it would invite examination. The beer is excellent. This arrangement is expected to continue.
Six weeks ago, a transit crew member died at the Waldbrück transit facility. The official record lists a cardiac event. The crew's ship departed without filing the standard departure manifest and has not appeared at either adjacent system.
Practical Information
Brückenau is eight hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to GJ 601A and Sonnwend. The through-route position means more incidental Commission traffic than most hop-8 systems. The brewery is open to visitors. The highland communities have more representation questions than the valley council's charter answers.
