THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — OSHIMA
OSHIMA is a Japanese island name meaning "large island," chosen by wave_3 founders who arrived and found a pale tan disk visible from the gate approach, isolated in a dim stellar neighborhood, and undeniably island-like — which is the kind of naming precision that reveals something about the people who did it.
The Island
The second aperture leads outward to GJ 848, an unwritten stub system with limited habitation that Oshima administers under a renewable operating charter, and beyond that the spur ends. There is no through-traffic here. What arrives at Oshima comes to Oshima.
Three hundred years of that topology have produced a community that knows itself with considerable thoroughness: the Japanese cultural heritage maintained with the intensity proportional to isolation, a language certification requirement for civic service that is one of the more explicit forms of cultural gatekeeping in this part of the corridor, and an architectural tradition built around the atmospheric maintenance infrastructure that 8% of Oshima's working population is employed to sustain. Three hundred years ago the terraforming equipment was installed. Three hundred years later it still requires continuous maintenance, and it produces nothing that anyone can hold in their hands, which is the source of the community's most persistent political tension.
The candidates who argue for transition to sealed-habitat living — reducing the maintenance burden at the cost of the surface environment that defines Oshima's character — have been losing electoral cycles consistently. Whether this reflects genuine community preference for the surface environment or insufficient information about how much time the surface environment actually has is a question that the atmospheric engineering division's internal models could answer and have not publicly answered.
The Models
The Island Council's atmospheric engineering division maintains the base models underlying all maintenance calculations and controls access to them. An independent assessment request from the University of Tanaka was declined on infrastructure security grounds three decades ago. An internal projection, leaked in partial form twelve years ago, showed a divergence between current maintenance capacity and long-term atmospheric stability requirements larger than the Council had publicly acknowledged. The full internal models have not been released.
A retiring member of the engineering division has recently made contact with the University of Tanaka research team that was refused access thirty years ago.
Practical Information
Oshima is seven hops from Gateway with two gate apertures connecting to Tanaka Station and GJ 848. The rare-earth mineral extraction from GJ 848 operations is the primary export alongside precision-machined components. The Cultural Registry's language examination requirement is enforced consistently. The surface environment is beautiful in the specific way that maintained things are beautiful — the beauty includes the cost of the maintenance.
