THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — PORTO FECHADO
PORTO FECHADO means "closed port," which the founders chose deliberately, with the dry humor of people who selected a dead-end system and wanted you to know before you arrived.
The Design Constraint
One gate. Three hundred years. The K3V primary offers a genuinely hospitable surface — moderate gravity, breathable atmosphere, seasonal weather, rolling continental terrain — which makes the dead-end topology a matter of deliberate choice rather than environmental necessity. The wave 3 founders could have looked elsewhere for better connectivity. They chose this. The question is why.
The answer they built into their institutions is legible: self-sufficiency as a design constraint, not an aspiration. The founding generation understood that a single gate connection is one malfunction or one political dispute from total isolation. They designed the agriculture to be redundant — nine crop families across three growing regions, seed banks maintained at investment levels that comparable systems would not justify. They built light manufacturing to cover what they could not grow. They organized their civic administration around managing strategic reserves at levels that neighbors call excessive and residents call prudent. The gate has not closed in three hundred years. The design assumption that it might has persisted anyway. Communities that build for the worst case and then don't experience it don't stop building for the worst case; they conclude the preparation is working.
What Moves Through the Gate
Through the single connection to Carvalhais, something moves in larger volumes than Porto Fechado's visible agricultural and manufacturing output would generate. The GJ 785 Logistics Syndicate handles the commercial freight. The settlement council handles strategic reserve logistics. The boundary between these functions is maintained with a formality that suggests the distinction matters. What the Syndicate moves is the Syndicate's business. The Carvalhais side maintains the same discretion. The Assembly manifests have always passed inspection.
The retired gate technician at Carvalhais who worked the GJ 785 gate for forty years, and who has told her granddaughter about the same freight container she watched transit in both directions seventeen times under seventeen different shippers, is one hop away and not Porto Fechado's problem.
Practical Information
Porto Fechado is five hops from Gateway with one gate aperture. Population approximately fifteen thousand, stable for a century. The reserve committee's monthly meeting minutes are the most closely followed public documents in the system. Food imports are planned in multi-year cycles. The K3V primary provides excellent growing conditions for a community that has spent three centuries ensuring it will not need to rely on them exclusively.
