THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — PRAXIS
PRAXIS is where the Reach's intellectual class was trained, which means it is where the assumptions that run the Reach were formed, and where the people who formed them remain affiliated in various emeritus capacities that give them continued access to the people currently forming the next generation's assumptions.
The Research World
Nine hundred million people on a temperate ocean world that the founding generation chose, five hundred years ago, for its habitability and its gate connectivity. Praxis was not settled for economic output — Aurelius's founding principle was institutional rather than extractive, and the world they chose reflects this: broad ocean coverage for temperature stability, breathable atmosphere without significant engineering, the physical conditions that allow concentrated intellectual work without the constant environmental management that marginal worlds require.
The research institutions here are the oldest in the inner Reach outside Gateway's Veil Institute facilities. The Commission's foundational administrative doctrine was developed here. The Assembly's governing frameworks were theorized here before they were legislated at Sirius. The gate physics curriculum that trains every gate technician in the Reach traces its theoretical foundations to work done here, by researchers whose successors in those chairs are aware of the lineage and not always aware of its full implications.
The Academic City
Praxis does not have one capital city. It has several research-city clusters built around the major institutional presences, separated by ocean and connected by transit. The Gate Corporation's academic presence. The Commission's administrative training facilities. The Assembly's theoretical governance programs. The Veil Institute's affiliated research centers, which are not Institute outposts in any formal administrative sense but whose faculty trained with Institute-adjacent researchers and whose work fits into theoretical frameworks the Institute established.
Nine hundred million people is more than most academic worlds. The non-research population — service economy workers, agricultural production operators, the miscellaneous civilian population that emerges around any stable settlement after five centuries — outnumbers the academic and institutional population substantially. Praxis is a research world in the sense that research defines its identity and drives its external relationships. It is also, practically, a world where most people are not researchers.
What Gets Taught
The published curriculum at Praxis's academies is thorough, rigorous, and represents the Reach's best publicly available understanding of gate mechanics, institutional theory, and governance doctrine. The published curriculum is built on theoretical frameworks established by researchers who had access to information that has not been published. The academic program teaches the frontier of what can be taught. The students who complete it are the best-prepared gate physicists and administrative theorists in the Reach. They are not, in all respects, working with everything there is to know.
Whether this is a failure of academic integrity or simply the ordinary condition of knowledge — that practice always outpaces theory, that senior practitioners know things students do not — is a question Praxis's own ethics faculty teach with characteristic rigor.
Practical Information
Praxis is accessible under standard landing protocols. The academic institutions have public visitor programs, open lectures, and library access for credentialed researchers from other institutions. The ocean transit network connecting the research clusters is functional and provides practical access to the coastline environments for which the world is informally known.
Via Exedra research station orbits above and handles high-security research functions not suitable for surface facilities.
Adams of the Guide rates Praxis: Where the Reach learned to think. What it knows that it does not teach is the better question.
