THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — PUERTO RIVERA
PUERTO RIVERA has survived seven variable-star cycles, which means it knows exactly how to prepare for the eighth. The question is whether it can do so before the news gets out.
The Farm
The G5 subgiant variable's higher luminosity pushed the habitable zone outward to a world with unusually productive growing conditions. Puerto Rivera exports agricultural surplus — grain and processed protein that feeds the north corridor. The system was settled in Wave 2 by Emilio Rivera's agricultural survey expedition, drawn from Latin American cooperatives, producing a Spanish-heritage founding community on a north corridor gate path. After six generations, the cultural mix has broadened, but the cooperative governance model, the naming traditions, and the food culture remain.
The variable star is an ongoing economic consideration. Luminosity fluctuation on a twenty-two-year cycle requires agricultural planning over multi-decade horizons, which has produced a class of specialist long-range planners who are among the most respected figures in local governance. The elected Council of Governors is a functional parliamentary body with genuine independence. The Assembly delegate attends and is treated with courtesy; the Council does not ask the delegate's opinion before acting on local matters.
The Eighth Cycle
The current twenty-two-year luminosity cycle is predicted to reach its peak variance in approximately eight years. The long-range planning committee's models suggest this cycle will be more intense than any in recorded settlement history. The committee's report was presented to the Council in closed session six months ago. The Council has not made it public. Seed vault procurement has quietly tripled.
Eight years is enough time to prepare, if the preparation can be conducted without every other north corridor system competing for the same seed stock. The planning committee knows this. The Council knows this. Okafor Station's family exchange, two hops away, appears to know it too — their eight-year grain futures position suggests someone has seen the report or modelled the same scenario independently.
Practical Information
Puerto Rivera is three hops from Gateway with three gate apertures — a junction connecting to Cairn, Lacaille (GJ 825), and Singh's Landing. The food is excellent, genuinely — this is one of the north corridor's major breadbaskets and the produce reflects five centuries of agricultural expertise. The people are hospitable. The planning is meticulous. The next eight years will determine whether meticulous planning and public silence are compatible.
