THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — ALSHAIN
ALSHAIN is a name from the old Arabic astronomical catalog — Beta Aquilae — applied to this system before human settlement was a concept and kept afterward because it was already in the navigation records and renaming things is a formal process nobody wanted to initiate at eleven hops from Gateway.
The Variable Star
G8IV. Subgiant. Variable. The luminosity is not constant: an eleven-year cycle of variation drives an agricultural calendar that Alshain's founding cooperative developed two hundred years ago and has updated and republished every season since. The cultivation calendar is one of the oldest continuously maintained documents in the system. Every resident knows where in the cycle they are. The harvest seasons near the brighter phase are celebrated. The leaner years are managed with the cooperative competence of a community that has done this before.
The G8IVvar primary's expanded habitable zone gave Wave 3 surveyors what they were looking for at this distance: genuine agricultural potential. The primary habitable body produces food surplus that the deep west corridor cannot grow for itself, and has been exporting it inward through GJ 395 and outward through GJ 4056 for two hundred years. The transit costs absorb most of the margin. The system is not dependent, which at hop 11 is the distinction that matters.
The Trend
A subgiant is evolving toward the red giant phase on a timescale measured in hundreds of millions of years. Irrelevant to any current inhabitant. But the luminosity variation amplitude has been increasing slowly — not dramatically, not urgently — across the two hundred years of Alshain's agricultural records. The council's technical assessment, last updated thirty years ago, described the trend as "within expected subgiant evolutionary parameters" and "not requiring response within the planning horizon."
The assessment has not been updated. The council's position is that updating it would produce a document requiring action, and action on a stellar evolution timescale is not a governance priority for a community with immediate agricultural cycles to manage. The calculation is defensible. The old assessment is still in the archive.
Governance here is the Agricultural Council: originally administrative, gradually absorbing governance functions as the founding settlement matured and no other institutional structure emerged to take them. The customary practice that has accumulated functions as a constitution. Nobody has tried to write it down formally. The founding generation has expressed no interest in formalization. The customary practice is working.
Practical Information
Alshain is eleven hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to GJ 4056 and Confluent. The Assembly's last recorded interaction described the system as "functionally autonomous, cultivation-focused, low-risk for intervention." Both the Assembly and the Compact are equally irrelevant at this distance. The harvest is good this cycle.
