THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — SKEMERAAND
SKEMERAAND is Afrikaans for "twilight evening" — the hour when the light has not quite gone but the darkness is visible. The community that named it was being precise about position, not poetic about atmosphere, though they achieved both.
The Five Centuries
Wave-2, hop 22, 520 years old. The same impossible chronology as Eerste Wacht at hop 18, separated by four hops and approximately two decades in the founding. The founding records of Skemeraand and Eerste Wacht share seven surnames. These were not separate groups. They were related expeditions — possibly the same extended community settling in sequence along a route they had planned before the first expedition departed. The first went to hop 22. The second went to hop 18. They placed themselves four hops apart on a corridor that would not carry regular traffic for another three centuries.
Both communities have persisted for half a millennium. Neither has explained why they came this far.
The community is approximately 300 people, maintained at that level through partnership protocols and population management matching Eerste Wacht's approach to genetic viability. The settlement is built into rocky terrain near a volcanic caldera whose residual thermal activity provides energy and whose mineral-rich soils support the only reliable agriculture on an otherwise marginal world. Five centuries of habitation are layered in architectural strata the community has never had surplus enough to replace and has always had just enough to endure.
The Last Light Before Dark
Skemeraand is the penultimate system on the deep corridor — the last community before Abzu at the terminus. Travelers heading one hop further are offered food, water, and rest. The community does not ask why you are going to Abzu. They have known why people go to Abzu for five hundred years. They provision the travelers heading deeper with the specific unhurried courtesy of people who have been here longer than most of the Reach's institutions have existed.
The supply relationship with Abzu runs in the other direction: the community forwards supply one hop further along the corridor, without commercial exchange, under terms not documented in any framework the Commission has been able to identify. The arrangement has been in place for centuries. The community does not describe its terms.
What the Elder Council Doesn't Say
The seven shared surnames. The coordinated placement of two communities on a corridor that would carry no traffic for three centuries. The founding purpose — which the founding record documents as a destination and does not explain. Five centuries of continuous habitation at hop 22, one hop from Abzu, sustained through conditions that should have produced abandonment multiple times.
The elder council's position, expressed through hospitality rather than explanation: you are welcome here, you may rest, when you are ready to continue, you may continue. What lies ahead is not their story to tell. What brought them here is not a story they tell at all.
Practical Information
Skemeraand is twenty-two hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Abzu and Candeia. Provisions are available. The caldera settlement is built for endurance, not comfort, but the hospitality is genuine. The K-type primary casts an amber light that dims toward evening into something the name describes exactly.
Adams of the Guide rates Skemeraand: The last light. The door is open. Rest before you continue.
