Ribeirão — "big river" in Portuguese — was named for the obvious reason. The system's primary habitable world is traversed by a river system that would be remarkable on any world: wide, slow-moving, ecologically complex, and agriculturally dominant. Three centuries of settlement have organized human life almost entirely around its watershed. Towns grew on the banks, then on the tributaries, then on the delta flats where the river meets a warm inland sea. The water does most of the work; the people manage it.

The system sits on a spur off Ribeiro's Star (GJ 54.1), which was itself a Portuguese-heritage farming system settled a generation or two earlier. Ribeirão is the spur-end — one aperture points back toward Ribeiro's Star, and the other links to Nascente further in. It is the middle of a three-system chain that looks, on a map, like a branch growing away from the main corridor. This spatial reality matters: Ribeirão is a transit system for anything moving between Nascente and the wider Reach, and it has grown accordingly. The transit infrastructure is older and heavier than you'd expect for a system this far out.

Three hundred years is enough time to lose the rawness. Ribeirão is not prosperous in the way hub systems are prosperous, but it is stable and self-assured in a way that newer settlements never quite manage.

Supply Dependency

Ribeirão exports agricultural products — primarily preserved grain, protein cultures, and processed river-delta output — toward Ribeiro's Star and through it to the south_reach corridor. It imports manufactured goods, medical hardware, and technical components. The balance is roughly sustainable and has been for two centuries.

Faction Notes

The Commission maintains an administrative post here — a proper one, not just a charter office. At hop 5 with wave_3 history, Ribeirão has enough density and transit volume to justify the overhead. Local civic authority sits with a municipal council that predates the Commission post by a century; the relationship is functional but occasionally territorial.

Silence Topic

Water extraction rights for the upper river basin — a long-running dispute between the established municipal authority and agricultural cooperatives that have been expanding into territories the original charter left undefined.

Narrative Hook

A survey vessel operating under Commission credentials has been mapping the river delta for six months; what they're actually measuring, and why the Commission would assign anyone to hydrological survey at hop 5, is not a question anyone has officially asked.

Calibration Note

Wave_3 spur_end at hop 5 is consistent with south_reach's development pattern — the Portuguese farming corridor pushed hard in the first three centuries, establishing productive systems deeper than might be expected.
