THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — RIBEIRÃO
RIBEIRÃO means "big river," which was the obvious name, and three hundred years of organizing human life almost entirely around a river system suggests the founding generation was paying attention.
The Watershed
The primary habitable world is traversed by a river system that would be remarkable on any world: wide, slow-moving, ecologically complex, and agriculturally dominant. Towns grew on the banks, then on the tributaries, then on the delta flats where the river meets a warm inland sea. The water does most of the work. The people manage it. Three hundred years is enough time to lose the rawness; Ribeirão is stable and self-assured in a way that newer settlements never quite manage and that visitors who grew up in hub systems sometimes mistake for complacency.
The system sits on a spur off Ribeiro's Star — itself a Portuguese-heritage farming system settled a generation or two earlier — and is the middle link in a three-system chain extending outward to Nascente. Anything moving between Nascente and the wider Reach transits through Ribeirão, which means the transit infrastructure is older and heavier than you'd expect for a system this far out. The Commission maintains a proper administrative post here, not just a charter office, which is the institutional acknowledgment that Ribeirão has enough transit volume to justify the overhead.
The River Rights Question
Water extraction rights for the upper basin have been under negotiation between the municipal authority — which predates the Commission post by a century — and the agricultural cooperatives that have been expanding into territories the original charter left undefined. This is the sort of dispute that three hundred years of accumulated river management expertise makes very interesting, in the sense that both sides have very specific and technical disagreements about what the original charter intended, and neither side is wrong in its own terms.
The survey vessel operating under Commission credentials that has been mapping the river delta for six months has not, as of the Guide's publication, clarified what it is actually measuring or why the Commission would assign anyone to hydrological survey at hop 5. This is not a question anyone has officially asked.
Practical Information
Ribeirão is five hops from Gateway with two gate apertures — spur end connecting to Ribeiro's Star and Nascente. Agricultural exports — preserved grain, protein cultures, processed river-delta output — move inward through Ribeiro's Star toward the south Reach corridor. The M3.5V primary is a standard mid-M dwarf. The delta is wide and slow. The Commission post is understaffed and territorial.
