THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — ENUGU
ENUGU has been controlled by the same founding families for six generations, and the founding families have arranged the local governance carefully enough that this is not technically a problem.
The Outer Hub
Three gates at hop 7: a junction in the outer north arc serving as the only significant commercial center for several hops in any direction. The founding families — the Okonkwo, Eze, and Nwachukwu surnames appear in every major commercial enterprise — arrived on a wave_3 extraction contract, recognized the mineral deposit survey data when they read it, and built a processing operation that their great-grandchildren operate today. The K0V star provides more Earth-comparable light than the M-dwarfs typical of the inner north arc, which the founding families noted positively in their original settlement documentation and which has made Enugu the closest thing to a comfortable posting available at this hop distance.
Three gates mean three adjacent systems' worth of supply and demand routing through this station. Transit fees compound. The commercial district is substantially larger than the population alone would support. Enugu has the outer north arc's only significant credit market. Carnarvon and Ratnagiri settle their interstellar accounts here. The Assembly's outpost is tiny and consulted mainly on filing requirements. The actual governance is local: Igbo-heritage community deliberation, deep precedent, earned standing through demonstrated contribution, and a deep-seated suspicion of institutions claiming authority without local legitimacy.
The Second Ledger
The processing operations pay a royalty line item to a holding account. The beneficial owner of this account is not listed on any public registry accessible from Enugu. The payments are modest — approximately two percent of gross processing revenue. Compounded over six generations, at the gross processing revenue of a three-gate outer-arc hub, this is not a modest sum from the recipient's perspective.
The junction's commercial registry has recorded every interstellar transaction through Enugu for three hundred years. The founding families' institutional memory knows better than to discuss the registry's second ledger openly.
Practical Information
Enugu is seven hops from Gateway with three apertures connecting to Ngata's Star, Ratnagiri, and Carnarvon. No Syndic holds a significant stake in the processing operations — the founding families bought out the original contracting entity three generations ago, and several buyers have since tried and failed to acquire a controlling interest. Gate Corporation's rotating maintenance crew is present and unobtrusive.
The commercial district is worth a visit if you have accounts to settle.
