THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — ROSS 154

ROSS 154 was skipped by three centuries of settlement because its star has a habit of erupting, which made it dangerous for anyone who needed to go outside. The people who eventually settled here do not need to go outside. They need abundant stellar flux and heavily shielded processing facilities, which is a different set of requirements that the same star happens to satisfy perfectly.

The Flare Star

The M3.5Ve primary is an eruptive flare variable. The evacuation protocols are not theoretical. Every resident is trained. The result is a community with an unusual practical solidarity — when the alert sounds, everyone moves together, regardless of employment status. It is the one area where the gap between contractor and permanent resident disappears.

The installed population lives almost entirely in shielded subsurface or orbital facilities. The economy is structured around transit throughput — three converging western corridor branches meet here, making Ross 154 a significant routing node despite its small population. The processing consortiums that operate the orbital infrastructure are the effective government. Governance is administered by a joint operations council representing the three major firms. The twelve thousand permanent residents who do not work for one of the three have advisory representation, which is a polite way of saying they are consulted and not heeded.

The Survey Gap

The system was surveyed multiple times before settlement. Three of those survey reports — covering the Wave 2 period — have gaps in their instrument readings at a specific orbital band that does not correspond to the flare activity that was nominally the reason for curtailment. The gap is not large. It is consistent across three separate expeditions. The processing consortiums are aware of it. They have not filed updated survey documentation. Something at that orbital band has been producing anomalous gate cycle timing that the operations council's technical staff has been logging internally for two years.

Practical Information

Ross 154 is three hops from Gateway with three gate apertures. The system feels new in a way that hop-3 systems almost never do — there is no deep institutional history, no accumulated governance tradition, no founding culture. The star is close to Sol at 9.7 light-years, which should have meant early settlement and did not, which is its own kind of story. The energy is abundant. The shielding is adequate. The alerts are regular.

Adams of the Guide rates Ross 154: Energetic. Keep Your Helmet.
