THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — GJ 726
GJ 726 is unremarkable in the way that deep frontier systems are unremarkable when they have nothing to offer and nothing to prevent — a K5 primary, a habitable zone world with thin atmosphere and native lichen, and two gate apertures connecting two places that have no particular interest in each other except that the corridor runs through here.
The Unchanging Lichen
The survey teams noted it: a native lichen-analogue covering most of the rocky habitable world's surface. Wave-3 surveyed it. Wave-4 surveyed it a century later and confirmed it had not changed. The lichen does not compete with introduced organisms because there is nothing about the world's energy budget that would support organisms vigorous enough to compete with anything. It persists by being precisely what the environment will sustain and nothing more. Survey language describes the world as "geologically quiet" with "lichen coverage" and moves on.
The world is not hostile to settlement. It is not hospitable to it either. The corridor needed a through-route node at this position, and GJ 726 provides it without requiring anything in return.
The Slow Increase
Transit logs show a pattern. Traffic through GJ 726 has increased slowly but measurably over the past fifty years. The increase does not correlate with new settlement in either direction — Claraboia's population has been stable, and the GJ 672 community beyond is a recent wave-5 arrival. The increase correlates with something further along the corridor, deeper, where the chain of settlements is extending toward Abzu.
The people who pass through GJ 726 are heading somewhere. The transit logs record direction and corridor pass-through times. They do not record purpose. As the deep frontier's furthest systems draw travelers who have a reason to go that far and do not share the reason with the transit records, GJ 726's logs reflect it as increasing volume in one direction. The lichen is unaffected.
Practical Information
GJ 726 is seventeen hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to GJ 672 and Claraboia. No services. Automated horizon station. Standard unsettled through-route maintenance schedule. The lichen is still there.
