THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — SAMUELS REACH
SAMUELS REACH was built on one person's recognition that a route existed, which is the founding story of many transit systems, but in Marcus Samuels's case the route he recognized was specifically the route that bypasses the Taishan junction's cargo inspections, which gives the founding story a somewhat different texture.
The Geometry
Marcus Samuels identified the loop-route value of this system in the mid-wave_3 period: a path connecting Changwon to Haodu that did not require passage through Taishan's substantial Lattice Commission customs operation. He petitioned Gate Corporation for a horizon station maintenance priority designation, the petition was granted, the route was formalized, and Samuels built the first transit station here using cargo revenue. The station complex at the settlement's core is still called the Samuels Terminal. He is remembered locally as a practical visionary.
The system has since grown a transit services economy optimized for operators who want speed over documentation scrutiny: fast refueling, minimal inspection overhead, discretionary cargo handling. The population is small and mostly consists of transit workers. The governance is a transit operators' association with residential representation structured as advisory.
The Inspection Rate
Cargo transiting through Samuels Reach technically requires the same Lattice Commission documentation as cargo transiting through Taishan. The Commission's resources at Samuels Reach are much smaller than at Taishan. The inspection sampling rate is correspondingly lower. Operators who understand this route understand it precisely.
The Commission has been requesting additional staffing resources for the Samuels Reach registration office for eleven years. The requests have been deprioritized, because the office has never officially reported an inspection failure rate that triggers a resource review. The inspection failure rate has never triggered a resource review because the inspection sampling rate is low enough that failures are statistically infrequent in the recorded data. This is a closed loop, and everyone in the transit operators' association understands exactly where it closes.
Practical Information
Samuels Reach is five hops from Gateway with two gate apertures connecting to Changwon and Haodu. The F7Vvar primary is mildly variable but not problematically so. The community is mixed-heritage at the overlap between the Korean-inflected Changwon sphere and the Chinese-inflected Haodu sphere, which is what happens when a route joins two distinct cultural corridors and the population reflects both directions of traffic. Nobody dominant; the blending is genuine.
