THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — DOIS SÓIS
DOIS SÓIS means "two suns," which is the first thing anyone notices and the last thing anyone fully accounts for before arriving.
Two Shadows at Noon
The binary system has been inhabited for three hundred years. The settlement here was founded by people who came looking for a challenge nobody else would follow them into. The binary orbital period creates seasonal variations more complex than single-star systems, the combined luminosity shifts as the stars' relative positions change, and the sky does not behave the way human neurology evolved expecting a sky to behave. Two distinct shadow directions at noon. A local calendar that tracks both stellar positions simultaneously. Architecture designed for shifting shadow angles. Agriculture timed to conditions that single-star cultivation expertise cannot directly address.
Three centuries of empirical adaptation have produced a fully functional food system. The agricultural practices that resulted are specific to Dois Sóis in ways that cannot be directly transferred to other systems, which is why they are not exported as methods — only as goods. The surplus commands higher prices than comparable single-star frontier systems, which is a fair reflection of the labor and expertise required to produce under binary conditions. The community regards the price premium as accurate and the occasional inner corridor complaint about it as a failure of imagination.
What the Survey Didn't Model
The founding cohort relied on survey reports that accurately described the astronomical conditions. What the reports did not model was the human experience of living under them. The perceptual effects of binary light — disrupted circadian rhythms, visual adaptation pressures, the subtle cognitive effects of a sky that behaves differently from any human nervous system's evolutionary baseline — were not described. The founding cohort discovered them by living them.
The first decades were more serious than the founding narrative acknowledges. The community has processed this into pride: they adapted, they succeeded, they stayed. What adaptation required of the specific people who lived through the first decades, what the failure rate was, what the founding cohort experienced before their children were born adapted — the community honors this period in its mythology and does not examine it in detail. The difficulty is present in the story as proof of achievement. Its specific content is not.
Practical Information
Dois Sóis is nine hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Travessa and GJ 868. Agricultural exports are available at binary-premium prices. Manufactured goods and medical equipment come in through Travessa. The community has developed local fabrication capacity for agricultural machinery, because standard inner corridor designs don't account for binary light cycles. Commission compliance is clean and uninteresting. The community is self-assured without being insular — three centuries of solving something difficult, repeatedly, in front of no audience, produces a particular kind of confidence.
