THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — NGATA'S STAR
NGATA'S STAR is the outer limit of the north arc corridor, and it has spent two hundred years doing something with that position that most terminus systems don't: making things worth traveling for.
The Stone
The Ngata whanau arrived in wave_4 carrying their heritage's practice of pounamu working — the greenstone that carries deep significance in Maori tradition as a material for objects of spiritual and social meaning. The primary body's geology contains a nephrite-adjacent mineral, locally called ngata jade, with similar physical properties: hard, dense, waxy, color range from deep forest green to pale grey-green. The first generation found it. The second learned to work it in the methods their heritage prescribed. The third was producing objects that buyers in adjacent systems recognized as something worth traveling for.
Ngata jade is handcraft by deliberate choice. Each piece is individual work, signed by the maker, accompanied by documentation of the specific stone source. This is not aesthetic preference — it reflects a cultural position about what the work is for and what it means that an object carries a specific person's hands throughout its creation. The community has made a deliberate choice not to industrialize. The Ngata Stone Collective manages sourcing rights and the certification mark.
The Dialogue
One hop away is Enugu, a West African heritage system settled at roughly the same time. The single hop between them has been traversed frequently enough for 200 years that the boundary between cultural streams is more permeable here than anywhere else in the outer north arc. Enugu's woodworking tradition — which carries its own deep cultural significance — has cross-pollinated with jade working to produce a recognized joint aesthetic: pieces that combine stone and wood in forms neither tradition uses alone, created by artists fluent in both vocabularies. The Cross-Passage Council certifies combined-tradition works under marks recognized by both communities. The makers are as likely to be of blended heritage as of distinct origin.
A buyer who has commissioned pieces for fifteen years arrived with a specific request: a piece incorporating stone from the new deposit areas, which she has somehow been told are particularly fine. The information could only have come from someone who has seen the Outer Survey's internal assessment, which has not been released. One of the three unlicensed candidate deposit areas is on land whose surface rights are held by a Ngata family member who has not disclosed this to the Collective.
Practical Information
Ngata's Star is seven hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Kelburn Crossing and Enugu. The K2V primary provides orange-tinted light and adequate growing seasons. Institutional presence is minimal — the Assembly's nearest office is multiple hops inward, the Collective fills the governance function. Buyers who come to commission directly from makers are welcome and hosted by a small hospitality sector that knows what its visitors want.
