THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — GJ 695A
GJ 695A is a three-gate junction with a G5 sub-giant primary and a habitable world in the middle of the temperate zone and no settlement charter, no colonial application, and no one who has stayed more than a few hours in thirty-five years of human traffic.
The Non-Settlement
The survey team that passed through thirty-five years ago filed a standard preliminary report: rocky world, middle of the habitable zone, moderate surface temperatures, nothing categorically hostile to human habitation. Standard recommendation for further evaluation. The further evaluation has not been scheduled. The Assembly's position, restated periodically in response to commercial development inquiries, is that any qualifying application will be accepted. No qualifying application has been filed. The outer south Reach development interests that have assessed the system have, without exception, concluded that the junction position offers genuine value and then declined to advance to a formal proposal. The stated reasons vary. The outcome is consistent.
The transit logs do not record any crew requesting shore leave. No extended stays. No survey or exploration activity despite three decades of regular traffic. People stop at the automated station, file their manifests, refuel, and leave. This could simply be the behavior of freight crews on scheduled runs who have no reason to linger at a waypoint. The freight crew accounts that document the GJ 695A stop are also, in the aggregate, slightly too uniform to be the product of independent observation — same tone, same observations about the G5 light through the station viewport, same mild relief at departing on schedule. No one has formally noted this pattern. The Commission's transit logs do not have a field for crew affect.
Transit times through GJ 695A are consistently two to four hours shorter than route optimization models predict. This has been statistically robust across eight years of data. No corresponding pattern appears at any other unsettled junction.
The Horizon Station
Clean. Functional. Self-maintaining. Alien architecture in the same undamaged condition documented at original survey. Everything operating at nominal parameters. There is no technical reason why settlement has not occurred.
Practical Information
GJ 695A is five hops from Gateway with three gate apertures — junction connecting Confluência, Ribeiro's Star, and Várzea. The G5IV primary is a sub-giant, evolved slightly off the main sequence, warmer and more luminous than a G5V would be. Traffic is consistent. The stop is efficient. Nobody lingers.
