THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — MWANGAZA
MWANGAZA means illumination — the quality of brightness that makes things visible and comprehensible — which the founding generation chose as a statement of aspiration because the M5 light filtering through the planet's dense, humid atmosphere produces a diffuse orange-pink glow that is nothing like clarity and everything like warmth.
The Fabric
The planet's high-humidity atmosphere drove the evolution of plant life with structural proteins that form long, fine, extremely tensile filaments. Not silk. Not cotton. Nothing that mapped onto any textile tradition the founders had brought with them, but something that could, with the right cultivation and processing techniques, become fabric. It took two generations to develop those techniques. The result is Mkeka — the Swahili word for woven mat, a deliberate connection to the woven traditions of the East African coasts where the founding community remembered their origins.
Mkeka fabric is hand-woven. This is not sentiment. The fiber's structural properties respond to the micro-tension variations of human hands in ways that mechanical production does not replicate; the filaments align differently under variable tension, and the aligned fabric drapes and ages differently. Weavers apprentice for three years before producing fabric under the Guild's certification mark. The patterns encode information — weaver's family, community, training lineage, occasionally specific events. Someone who knows how to read them learns a great deal about who made a given piece.
The Weavers' Guild maintains a pattern archive going back to the third generation. The archive is not public. What is known among the Guild's senior members, and not discussed outside that group, is that the archive contains patterns attributed to the founding generation whose weavers have no documented descendants anywhere in the system's genealogical record. The Guild's position is that founding-era records were incompletely maintained. No one has examined whether those patterns appear in the textile archives of other systems.
The Gap Between Producer and Market
Mkeka appears on Mercado's high-end textile shelf at select locations under the Guild's provenance seal. The quantities sold through Mercado are small by the chain's standards. The markup between the system gate price and the Mercado shelf price is the kind of number the Guild finds instructive about the distance between a producer community and its end market — a lesson in how value is distributed across a supply chain that the Guild's senior weavers consider periodically and do not discuss with Mercado.
Practical Information
Mwangaza is five hops from Gateway with two gate apertures — spur end connecting to Zenzele and GJ 3323. Population is small; by outer south Reach standards, comfortable. The Weavers' Guild holds two of the five settlement council seats by convention. The Fiber Cooperative, which supplies the Guild's weavers on a Guild-administered pricing schedule, finds this arrangement structurally familiar in the way that primary producers and processors always find arrangements where the processor controls certification and market access.
