THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — PASO LARGO
PASO LARGO is named for the "long stride" — the ring-light of a gas giant's atmosphere, or the founding expedition's final approach trajectory, or the distance already traveled. The founding families disagree about which. Three centuries in, the disagreement has become part of the name.
The Moon Settlement
The settlement sits on the larger of two moons orbiting a ringed gas giant, under a K3V primary that provides amber light and a sky that is never entirely dark — the gas giant's ring reflection produces a pale band at the horizon through every night cycle. Complex tidal patterns from the orbital mechanics. A sky that behaves differently from anything the founding families had previously lived under, and which three hundred years of descendants have never found unusual, because it has always been the sky.
Wave-3 settlers arrived three hundred years ago along the corridor from GJ 354A: predominantly Brazilian and Mozambican heritage, carrying cooperative agricultural traditions from marginally conditioned land, adapted quickly to the moon's particular requirements. The cooperative structure they established has survived three centuries without fundamental revision. Whether this represents excellent design or the absence of conditions requiring revision is a question the community regards as academic.
The Cap on Growth
The founding cooperative's charter includes a provision capping production expansion at levels the community's own labor can sustain without external hiring. Three centuries later, the provision is still in force, enforced by social pressure rather than legal mechanism. The community does not want to grow. Growth at hop 13 means dependency, and dependency at hop 13 means vulnerability to supply chain decisions made by people who have never seen the ring-light on the gas giant's atmosphere in the middle of the night. The community's founders understood this. Their descendants do not need to relearn it.
Transit traffic passes through. The corridor connects GJ 354A to GJ 875 and beyond. Paso Largo maintains basic reprovisioning — water, atmosphere cycling, simple food stores — because providing minimal services is less disruptive than explaining why you don't. The distinction between a community that welcomes visitors and one that is merely equipped to receive them is understood here in practical terms.
Practical Information
Paso Largo is thirteen hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to GJ 875 and GJ 354A. Basic reprovisioning is available. No institutional presence. No Commission post. No Syndic operations. The cooperative governs by consensus. The ring-light on the gas giant's atmosphere is visible through any port facing the primary body. The oldest families all have a different story about where the name comes from.
