THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — SONNENKAP
SONNENKAP is startlingly bright.
A G0V primary at hop 14 is a physical anomaly of the kind that makes transit crews adjust their viewport filters and then look again. After thirteen hops of K-dwarfs and M-dwarfs, dim amber corridors and managed circadian schedules, the transition through the GJ 201 junction into Sonnenkap's light produces a physiological response that multiple transit logs have noted without being able to fully articulate. "It feels like morning," one crew record states. It does not explain further. It does not need to.
The Engineers Who Became Farmers
The wave-4 settlers arrived approximately 160 years ago — a German-heritage engineering cooperative from the west_reach's inner corridor. They named the system before they arrived, based on the survey data: Sonnenkap, "sun cape," for a G0V star that sits like a bright headland at the end of a long dim corridor. The confidence implicit in naming a place before you've seen it, from survey charts alone, tells you something about the founding cohort.
The habitable world is warm, wet, and receptive to human agriculture without the compromises that dim-star worlds demand. The engineering cooperative brought west_reach industrial discipline to that world. After 160 years, the result is a community whose infrastructure is over-specified, whose irrigation systems are elegant, whose buildings are structurally conservative, and whose agricultural output per hectare is among the highest of any non-Syndic operation in the deep frontier.
The community does not advertise this. They do not need to. The corridor traders who visit carry the information outward in the form of goods that are notably well-made and food that is notably fresh for the distance.
The Solar Premium
Sonnenkap's position at hop 14 means it is the nearest solar-type star to many of the systems further along the corridor. For communities at hop 15 and beyond — Kettenschmied, the deeper chain, the systems that have been living under dim stars for generations — Sonnenkap represents something their residents have not experienced: sunlight that matches what human biology evolved under. Whether this is a benefit of visiting or an uncomfortable reminder of what the frontier lacks is something the community leaves for visitors to decide.
Practical Information
Sonnenkap is fourteen hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to GJ 201 and GJ 532. Agricultural exports are available and are notably good. The cooperative governance structure involves no Syndic operations, minimal Commission presence, and the specific institutional wariness that west_reach heritage communities carry. Visitors who arrive with legitimate purpose are received with the particular warmth of a community confident in its own resources.
