THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — TAISHAN
TAISHAN was named after one of China's sacred mountains, an aspirational gesture from a wave_4 corporate founding consortium that wanted cultural gravitas without the specificity of a place-transplant, and whose successor entities have since merged, been acquired, and dissolved across four commercial generations while leaving behind an unresolved question about who is responsible for the contaminated ground.
The Junction Economy
Three gates, deliberate investment, a combined corporate-residential council where major decisions require corporate seat concurrence. The founding design reflects the fact that the junction value was known before the settlement was built: this is a system that was invested in rather than accumulated. The industrial economy that followed — cargo repackaging, transit equipment repair, structural components, bulk processing — is the natural output of a junction that handles significant freight volume and has the infrastructure to add value to what passes through it.
The Yongli Combine has a production affiliate here. The founding consortium's successor entity holds two corporate council seats. The residential representatives are genuinely elected. The corporate structure means that major decisions require corporate concurrence, which means major decisions that corporate seat holders disagree with tend not to become major decisions.
The Remediation Assessment
One of the earlier industrial operations at Taishan — a bulk processing facility that ran for approximately sixty years before being shut down and transferred — left subsurface contamination in the habitat zone adjacent to the original development footprint. This is documented in internal corporate records. A remediation assessment was commissioned eighteen years ago. The assessment recommended action.
The action has not been taken, because the corporate seat holders cannot agree on proportional liability for a facility that changed ownership three times before it was shut down. The liability question is technically complex. It is also eighteen years old and getting no simpler. The residential council has not been shown the assessment. They live above the original development footprint. The corporate seat holders who commissioned the assessment live in the newer development zones.
Practical Information
Taishan is five hops from Gateway with three gate apertures connecting to Kovács Loop, GJ 434, and Changwon. The Lattice Commission's office handles freight inspection for three-gate traffic volume with experienced personnel. Gate Corporation operates a full junction maintenance team. The commissioning of an environmental report that has been withheld from the affected population for eighteen years is not a Commission compliance matter under current frameworks, which is itself a matter of ongoing interest to the Commission's policy review process.
