THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — CARNARVON
CARNARVON is the kind of spur-end system where the founding family's name appears on four of the seven primary agricultural regions, and no one has ever found this remarkable enough to comment on.
The Spur
One gate in, one gate out — both the same gate. No through traffic. Everything that passes through Carnarvon's horizon station is either coming here or came from here. The economy is correspondingly local: mixed cereal and legume agriculture on the primary, light manufacturing for self-maintenance, and a fishing cooperative on the second-largest settlement body that has been running on the same structure for three hundred years. The Mostert family arrived on a wave_2 land-survey contract four centuries ago and simply stayed when the survey was complete. The family name appears on four of the seven primary agricultural regions and two of the manufacturing cooperatives. The land was surveyed by the Mosterts, allocated by the Mosterts, and has passed to Mostert descendants in every generation since. The Assembly's inheritance and land-use frameworks nominally apply. No one has ever tested them here.
The Cape-heritage founding culture — practical, self-reliant, deeply skeptical of external institutional claims on local governance — makes Carnarvon more comfortable with its effective isolation than most Assembly administrators would prefer. The system is not hostile to outside contact. It simply does not require it.
The Contract
The original land-survey contract under which the founding party arrived has a public record: the survey was commissioned, completed, and filed. It does not establish what terms governed the surveyors' rights to claim residency after filing, or what the contracting party received in exchange. The contracting party — a wave_2 colonial development firm that no longer exists as a legal entity — apparently received something, because the contract was filed as fulfilled.
The firm transferred its archived assets to a successor entity three mergers ago. Someone in that chain has been paying annual archival access fees on Carnarvon's founding records for the past forty years.
Practical Information
Carnarvon is six hops from Gateway with one aperture connecting to Enugu and Athabasca. The K5 primary is warm and steady by outer arc standards. The fishing cooperative produces a surplus of processed marine protein. The agricultural governance council is slow, consensual, and weighted in practice by vote blocs that formal structures would officially decline to acknowledge. Assembly's nearest outpost is at Athabasca. Gate Corp maintains a minimal rotating crew.
Nobody comes here without a purpose. The Mosterts are hospitable to people with purposes.
