Schuilhoek is three hundred years old. The name is Dutch — it means shelter corner, or hiding nook — and it was not chosen ironically. The founders came through Cairn, found a warm pocket behind the empty hub, and tucked themselves in. No announcement, no colonial press release, no commission fanfare. They filed a charter, built gates between the worlds they meant to farm, and got to work.
The K1V star is one of the warmest in the K-type class, close enough to G-type territory that the light runs amber-gold rather than the deep orange of cooler dwarf systems. Long growing seasons. Reliable solar input across a year that farmers learn to trust. The habitable bodies — four of them cultivated, varying in soil composition and microclimate — are genuinely productive, the kind of worlds that reward three hundred years of patient attention with something lush and particular.
The founders' timing was not accidental. They chose this pocket before the Reach's expansion pressure had pushed into the northern arcs in earnest. They chose it because it was warm, because it was reachable, and because the route ran through a hub that generated no incidental traffic and therefore no incidental attention. These were people who had thought carefully about what they wanted from the Reach, and what they wanted was to be left to farm it.
The Four Worlds
The span gate network connecting the cultivated bodies is old, low-profile, and has been running without outside maintenance for two centuries. The gates are utilitarian in the way that farm equipment is utilitarian: built to work, repaired when they stop, unremarkable except to the people who depend on them.
Each world has its own character and its own families. The innermost body runs warm and dry — root vegetables, legumes, the grain varieties that the founders crossbred across generations until they behaved correctly in alien soil. The second body is cooler and high in atmospheric moisture; it produces the leafy staples that the other worlds cannot sustain at scale. The third body was the last to be cultivated and has the system's best soft fruit land, a detail that took sixty years to discover. The outermost of the four is not agricultural in the conventional sense — too variable in temperature for reliable cropping — but it carries the pasture land that runs the community's livestock herds across low-gravity terrain that suits the animals in ways no one fully understands but everyone has accepted as established fact.
Families tend specific worlds across generations. Children inherit the knowledge of particular soil as surely as they inherit the name. Coming together happens at the midsummer market, which rotates between the four worlds on a four-year cycle, and at the handful of festivals the community has accumulated over three centuries — some Dutch in origin, some not, some the product of specific agricultural crises that became, in retrospect, the kind of shared ordeal a community converts into tradition.
Supply Dependency
None registered externally. The community has not filed an import dependency declaration with any Commission trade registry in living memory. Internally, the dependency structure runs between the four worlds — each producing what the others require, calibrated over centuries into a balance that absorbs bad years on one body by drawing on reserves from the others. There is enough agricultural land distributed across enough climatic variation that a single crop failure has not produced a food shortage in approximately two hundred years. This is not luck. It is three hundred years of distributed farming on multiple worlds with different failure modes, and the accumulated knowledge of how to hold it all together.
What Schuilhoek does not export is a choice, not a constraint. There is surplus. There has been surplus for most of the community's history. The question of what to do with it has been answered, repeatedly and consistently, by not asking the question externally.
Faction Notes
The Concord Assembly's administrative records for Schuilhoek reflect a population figure that has not been updated since approximately the community's centennial. The number was accurate then. It is not accurate now. The discrepancy is not a matter of deliberate falsification — no one at Schuilhoek has submitted fraudulent documentation. The community has simply not submitted documentation of any kind for a very long time, and the Assembly's regional administrative apparatus has not prioritized verifying a system that generates no complaints, files no disputes, and asks for nothing.
There is no Commission office in Schuilhoek. There is no Assembly administrative representative. There is a community council — the Raad, which meets in the market building on the innermost world and has been meeting in some form since the settlement's second decade — and a system of customary law that has been running longer than some Reach institutions have existed. The Raad does not have formal Assembly recognition as a governance structure. It does not require it.
When Cairnside arrived forty years ago, the materials scientists found a functioning society where they had expected an empty system. The discovery was, by all available accounts, mutual: Schuilhoek had known Cairn was a transit point, but had not expected a settlement to appear on the other side of it. What passed between the two communities in the first years of contact is not documented in any external record. The Cairnside charter files mention a neighboring settlement in a single procedural note. Schuilhoek's own community records are not accessible to outside parties through any registry.
The two communities have since developed a practical working relationship. Cairnside's inability to feed itself and Schuilhoek's surplus production are facts that coexist in the same pocket, and whatever arrangement governs the food supply that moves through the span gate has been functioning quietly since Cairnside's third year.
Silence Topic
The Cairnside settlers know where their food comes from. They know how old their neighbors are. What they do not know — what no one outside this pocket knows with any precision — is the extent of what Schuilhoek has learned across three hundred years of farming multiple alien worlds under a K1V star.
The agricultural knowledge accumulated here has no equivalent in the Reach. Techniques for establishing stable yields in alien soil across multiple climatic regimes, documented failure modes and the solutions developed to address them, cultivar records spanning generations of selective adaptation, understanding of how K1V stellar output affects photosynthetic yields across the growing spectrum — none of this has been published. None of it has been requested. It exists in the community's records, in the knowledge carried by families who have farmed the same worlds for ten generations, and in the practices that have become so embedded in daily life that no one thinks of them as expertise.
As traffic through Cairn increases and the pocket's isolation decreases, the question of what Schuilhoek knows and what it is worth is beginning to have answers that people outside the community can attach numbers to. The Raad has not decided how it feels about this. The Raad has not had to decide before.
Crown's Hollow has maintained its navigational reserve to Cairn for two hundred years. Schuilhoek has been on the other side of Cairn for three hundred. Whether the court has known about Schuilhoek for the entirety of that overlap, and what, if anything, it has done with that knowledge, is a question that neither institution has been asked directly. Neither has volunteered an answer.
Narrative Hook
Three hundred years of multi-world agricultural knowledge, held by a community that has never needed to negotiate its value, now sitting one hop from a research settlement that cannot feed itself and two hops from an empty hub that is beginning to attract attention.
Calibration Note
wave_3 at hop_4 inverts the usual frontier logic: hop_4 systems settled in wave_3 are early arrivals, not late ones. The topology explains it. Schuilhoek sits behind Cairn, and Cairn generates no settlement pressure, no incidental traffic, and no economic signal that would prompt later arrivals to look further in. The systems that settled in wave_3 in the northern arc took direct or well-transited routes. Schuilhoek's founders took the quiet one, which is the point.
deep_frontier at hop_4 with a wave_3 settlement is an anomaly in the same register as Cairnside's: structural isolation, not spatial. Three hundred years of settlement that the Reach's administrative apparatus has not adequately registered is not unusual for systems that generate no disputes and ask for nothing. It is unusual at this age and this hop distance. The designation reflects the administrative reality, which is that Schuilhoek has never been close to the Reach in any way that the Reach measures proximity.
