THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — ABZU
ABZU is the furthest settled system in the Reach. Hop 23. Dead-end. One gate, connecting back through Skemeraand to the corridor behind. The K-type primary is amber and unremarkable. A mid-range gas giant reflects that amber light back across the inner system in a diffuse wash that produces doubled illumination — direct and reflected, both warm — that visitors describe in terms that vary in vocabulary and converge in affect.
The community finds the light unremarkable. The light is how the light is.
The Entry for Which Adams & Ford Has No Entry
Adams & Ford maintains GJ 6711 as a catalog entry with the status "forthcoming." Three correspondents have been dispatched over the past century and a half. The first two filed partial reports and returned to the corridor. The third arrived, filed two preliminary dispatches, and stopped filing. The correspondent is not dead. The correspondent is not missing. The correspondent is, according to the most recent information available to Adams & Ford's editorial office, still at Abzu. The editorial office has not dispatched a fourth correspondent.
The Veil Institute dispatched a researcher approximately six years ago on an assignment expected to last eighteen months. The researcher has not rotated out. The reports, filed at irregular intervals, are classified upon receipt at the Institute's highest restriction level. The researcher's assignment status reads "extended" without a termination date.
What the Founding Record Contains and Does Not
Wave-3, approximately 300 years old. Seventy-four names, a material inventory, a destination. No founding charter. No economic purpose. No institutional affiliation. Seventy-four people who went to hop 23 and stayed. The Commission's registry classifies the governance as "local custom." No charter on file. No administrative structure documented. Decision-making appears communal in a way that outside observers describe as reaching consensus through a process that does not involve formal deliberation and that has not been explained by community members.
What Visitors Report
A warmth of reception that begins upon arrival and deepens with duration in a way that visitors describe as genuine and cannot explain as conditional upon anything they have done or said to earn it. A quality of attention produced by the doubled-light sky that trained observers have noted in their reports, when they were still filing reports. Architecture in the oldest buildings with proportions that do not match standard human ergonomic specifications — doors 10 to 15 percent taller than standard, ceilings higher, corridors wider. "The founders built high," is the standard response. It is not the full response.
The community does not export. It does not trade. The 300-year population — stable between 300 and 500 — is maintained by a process that does not appear in any governance document. People arrive occasionally, one or two at a time. Some leave. The ones who stay tend to stay permanently.
The Silence
The founding purpose. The architectural proportions. The population stability. The quality of the light. The correspondents who stopped filing. The researcher who stayed. The supply arrangement with Skemeraand. The community's relationship with whatever the founding cohort came here to find or to be near or to attend to.
The silence is not hostile. It is not evasive. It is the silence of people who are doing something that does not have words in the language visitors bring with them, and who have decided that the absence of words is more honest than an approximation.
The name — Abzu, Sumerian for the primordial deep — was given by the founding community and has propagated outward through travelers. The Commission still uses the catalog number. Adams & Ford uses the name. The community uses neither. They call it home.
Practical Information
Abzu is twenty-three hops from Gateway with one aperture connecting to Skemeraand. Visitors are received. The doubled-light sky is warm. The doors are tall.
