THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — ROÇA NOVA
ROÇA NOVA means "new plantation," chosen by São Toméan and Portuguese founders who knew exactly what a roça was and what it carried — and who named this place for the agricultural knowledge and the relationship to land that the tradition represents, stripped of what it was built on.
The Knowledge
The roça was a specific institution: a vast agricultural estate on São Tomé e Príncipe with its own internal logic, its own labor hierarchy, its own relationship to land that was built through coercion and survived in modified form long after the formal ending. The people who named this system were naming it from that history deliberately — not to celebrate what the roça was, but to claim what it also was: a specific, sophisticated, multigenerational knowledge of how to make tropical agriculture work under difficult conditions.
That knowledge, transmitted as worker practice rather than management documentation, is the resource that allowed the founding generation to adapt to alien soil chemistry faster than their formal preparation suggested was possible. The G2V star is nearly identical to Earth's sun in spectral class and provides excellent conditions for cacao and coffee cultivation. The alien soil chemistry was harder. The founding decade involved significant experimentation, loss, and revision. The second decade has been successful. What enabled that success is not in any formal agricultural knowledge base because it was never considered worth formal documentation by the people who were in a position to document things. The community does not discuss this knowledge with outside parties, not from secrecy but from the awareness that the knowledge's value lies partly in its specificity to the people who hold it.
The Forty-Year-Old Settlement
Wave 5, forty years old, first generation still alive. The founding capital is being spent down on schedule. Export capability is projected for year fifteen to twenty — cacao and coffee adapted to G2V-world soil chemistry, initially for the São Toméan diaspora communities in the inner Reach that constitute a specific market, eventually for the broader specialty agricultural trade. A Quilombo logistics operator who has been handling the community's import shipments has been offered a consulting fee by an unnamed inner-reach trading house to assess the projected cultivation timeline — an assessment the trading house could only use if they intended to establish a purchasing relationship before the community knew what its product was worth.
Practical Information
Roça Nova is eight hops from Gateway with one gate aperture — dead end connecting to Quilombo. The G2V primary provides excellent growing conditions. The community structure is the founding generation's council, informal and consensus-based, organized around agricultural working groups. The formal separation of governance and production management has not yet been needed. The Commission's five-year inspection is scheduled and has not yet passed.
