THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — GLIESE 667
GLIESE 667 kept its scientific catalog name because the founding consortium argued, convincingly, that the system was being settled specifically because of its pre-settlement astronomical reputation, and that reputation was attached to the designation in the scientific literature, and that changing it would make it harder for researchers elsewhere to find the community's publications — an argument so practically sound that even the faction wanting to honor a founding benefactor conceded it.
The Research Settlement
Wave_5 at a dead-end off Shenwei, recent enough that the productive base is still being established, remote enough that every supply shipment and personnel rotation passes through Shenwei's administrative systems under a transit agreement that is the most consequential document in the founding archive. What Gliese 667 intends to produce is data about the multiple rocky planets in and near its habitable zone — bodies that generated significant pre-settlement astronomical attention and motivated a founding consortium of Veil Institute affiliates and independent planetary scientists to file a settlement application and commit to the overhead costs.
Whether this produces commercially valuable findings within a timeframe that justifies those costs is an open question that the consortium's five-year review is scheduled to address. The Veil Institute's funding constitutes the largest single share of the operating budget. The Institute's representative does not vote disproportionately. The Institute's representative's concerns receive proportionate weight in deliberations that technically require consensus.
The Shenwei Question
Shenwei holds a wave_1 classified anomaly report describing a geological formation on one of its outer bodies that the original survey team considered inconsistent with natural formation processes. That outer body is at the edge of the wave_1 survey team's mapping range — within what subsequent charting confirmed is the Gliese 667 system's gravitational neighborhood.
At least one member of the Gliese 667 founding consortium is a Veil Institute affiliate who has read the Shenwei anomaly report summary through Institute archive access. Whether the settlement was partially motivated by interest in that anomaly is a question that member has not answered in any forum accessible to the other founders. The settlement has legitimate scientific reasons to be here that do not require explaining. The legitimacy of those reasons does not resolve whether they are the complete set.
Practical Information
Gliese 667 is six hops from Gateway with one gate aperture connecting to Shenwei. No Lattice Commission office. No Assembly presence beyond a registration filing. The founding consortium keeps the scientific catalog name in the literature networks. The five-year review approaches.
