THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — KAMPALA GATE
KAMPALA GATE was called Kampala for its first generation, until the fourth aperture was activated and transit operators started calling it by what it had actually become, and the name stuck because names that reflect economic reality usually do.
The Hub
Four apertures make Kampala Gate the distribution crossroads for the outer north arc. Freight arrives from GJ 473B and Pemberton's Loop, redistributes toward Crown's Hollow and Mabaso Junction. The reverse flow moves consumer goods and equipment outward. The bonded warehousing handles hazardous-cargo certification alongside standard transit processing — a specialization that developed when the extraction industries further out started moving materials that the inner-arc certifiers were reluctant to clear at distance. Four Gate Corporation maintenance teams are permanently stationed here, the largest Gate Corp footprint in the outer north arc. The workforce housing question is a standing agenda item on the Parliament's schedule, since the transit workforce's interests diverge from permanent residents' interests on housing allocation, social services, and commerce licensing in ways that a consultative coalition-building parliament is constitutionally obligated to take seriously.
The Nakibuuka family founded this system. They are still in Parliament. The fourth aperture is named for them in transit records, though the name doesn't appear on any signage.
The Fourth Aperture
Gate Corporation's position on the fourth aperture's 0.3-second transit-time discrepancy is that it is a sensor calibration artifact. This position has been consistent for sixty years. An independent analysis commissioned by a freight insurance company reached a different conclusion. The analysis was settled out of adjudication before its findings entered the public record. The freight insurance company no longer commissions independent analyses of Gate Corporation infrastructure. Cargo continues to pass through the fourth aperture on a consistent schedule, arriving 0.3 seconds off predicted transit duration, and the people who route freight through it have added the discrepancy to their operational calculations as a fixed variable.
The Parliament's delegate to the Concord Assembly is, by regional reputation, an effective committee operator. The system's four-gate transit revenue creates economic stakes in Assembly commercial policy that are defended vigorously. The bilateral transit agreement with Crown's Hollow one hop away has been in place for a hundred and sixty years, drafted in language that carefully avoids any implication about which institution is the senior party.
Practical Information
Kampala Gate is four hops from Gateway with four apertures connecting to GJ 473B, Pemberton's Loop, Crown's Hollow, and Mabaso Junction. The K5V primary is stable. The system cannot feed itself. East African Commonwealth heritage is visible in governance style: consultative, coalition-building, skeptical of unilateral executive action, and patient with processes that have been running for a hundred and sixty years without resolution.
