THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — CALDWELL POINT
CALDWELL POINT is named after the family that runs it, which is the kind of honesty you get from people who arrived at a junction before anyone with deeper capital and have been holding the gate ever since.
The Family
The Caldwells were English-heritage contract logistics managers from a mid-tier transport firm who arrived in Wave 3 and recognized the junction's structural value before anyone else did. They staked a land claim, negotiated gate scheduling rights, and were in place before the competing bids arrived from the inner corridor. Three generations of patient institutional building later, the family name is on the system. The Caldwells are not wealthy by Perpetual-class standards, but they are locally irreplaceable, which is a different kind of security.
The elected district council handles civic governance and is genuinely independent of the family on most questions — a compromise reached about a hundred and fifty years ago following a prolonged dispute over transit fees. The arrangement is described as satisfactory by both sides and warm by neither.
The Queue
Three apertures converging at a junction where inbound traffic from the inner west disaggregates into three separate branches. The family logistics operation and Gate Corporation jointly manage gate scheduling. The question of whether the routing priority decisions subtly favor operators who maintain commercial relationships with the Caldwells is one that neither party has any incentive to subject to formal review. Complaints from outer-corridor operators are routed to a Gate Corporation grievance process that has not produced a finding against the local scheduling authority in fifty years.
Practical Information
Caldwell Point is three hops from Gateway with three gate apertures. The K5V star is unremarkable. The system's value is entirely positional — a waypoint in the transit geography, which is exactly what the "Point" in the name signals. The food is adequate. The family is welcoming. The queue is the queue.
