THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — JOHANNSEN'S STAR
JOHANNSEN'S STAR is named after the geologist who found the ore, which tells you everything about the system's priorities and saves the trouble of asking about anything else.
The Consortium
Sigrid Johannsen's survey work triggered the Wave 3 settlement program. Her descendants still hold a board seat on the Johannsen Extraction Consortium, which has run the refineries for six generations under a self-renewing charter. The Assembly has twice flagged the perpetual-renewal clause as inconsistent with competitive licensing standards. Both times the local parliament has voted to retain it, which is the democratic process functioning exactly as designed and producing exactly the outcome the founding family intended.
The subgiant star's expanded envelope burned away surface volatiles from the inner orbital bodies millennia ago, leaving behind unusually dense mineral deposits. Raw ore arrives inbound from the outer systems; Johannsen's Star has the refinery capacity to upgrade it and ship processed concentrates toward the core. The economic logic is straightforward. The governance logic follows it.
The Missing Geologist
An independent survey team recently identified a secondary ore body beneath the northern shelf of the primary mining moon — one that the Consortium's own surveys missed, or suppressed. The team's lead researcher has not been seen publicly for eleven weeks. The Consortium says she is on extended field assignment in the outer belt.
The Veil Institute maintains a small geological research station in the outer orbital zone. The researchers are unobtrusive and rarely intersect with local governance, which is either professional restraint or the specific kind of disinterest that comes from already knowing what you need to know.
Practical Information
Johannsen's Star is three hops from Gateway with three gate apertures. The system is a junction connecting the outer extraction corridors to the core via Cairn. The Norwegian founding heritage is a corporate-origin cross-corridor exception. The refineries are efficient. The charter is perpetual. The system's entire economic history rests on one survey report filed by one woman three hundred years ago, and her descendants have made sure no one develops a second opinion.
