THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — BREËVLEI
BREËVLEI means wide marsh, which is what the survey team named it when they catalogued the primary world's broad tidal lowlands before anyone lived there, and the settlers who arrived later decided this was accurate enough to keep.
The Bright Link
What makes Breëvlei unusual for a Wave 5 settlement is its star. The F7V primary burns hotter and brighter than the M-dwarfs typical of this corridor — a blue-white cast that the Cairn pocket's other farming communities never see. Settlers from Waterkant and deeper in the chain find the light too sharp when they visit. The locals have adapted, and there is a quiet pride in that: being the bright link in a dim corridor.
Settlement is concentrated around the tidal shelf zones where agriculture is viable. The marsh lowlands that gave the system its name are largely undeveloped — considered too difficult to drain and too ecologically active to risk destabilizing. Whether to treat them as a resource or leave them alone is a debate that Wave 5 communities often carry with them for generations.
The community does not yet produce exportable surplus. It depends on inbound supplies from Waterkant and the corridor behind it. The settlement council handles land allocation and civic order; the Commission holds nominal authority but visits infrequently, which at this hop distance means it governs by the occasional letter rather than the occasional presence.
The Marsh
The original survey report filed before settlement included anomalous spectral readings from the tidal lowlands — readings that don't match any catalogued biological marker. The data was noted, flagged for follow-up, and never followed up on. No one on the settlement council knows it exists.
Settlers have been finding weathered marker stakes in the deep marsh. Not recent. Not their own. Placed with a geometry that doesn't match any standard survey protocol.
Practical Information
Breëvlei is six hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Stilwater inward and Waterkant. The Cairn pocket extension continues through here. The community is young, the governance is improvised, and the tidal lowlands are not yet fully catalogued. The blue-white F-type light is genuinely distinctive for the corridor.
