THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — SEONGHO
SEONGHO sits on a world of black-rock plains fractured by heat vents with a thin nitrogen-CO2 atmosphere that settlers never managed to breathe directly and never seriously tried to, because the survey reports were unambiguous about the geothermal potential, and the Korean-heritage founders who arrived in wave_3 read an energy opportunity where another community might have read an environment problem.
The Warmth
Over three hundred active bore installations, a distribution network feeding all local sealed habitats and the gate cluster itself, and an export pipeline producing standardized power cells and thermal conversion units for ships that stop to recharge. Seongho is one of the better-capitalized systems at this corridor distance. The culture has organized itself around heat management as a social value: interiors maintain precise temperature gradients by zone, residents navigate between them with an unconscious awareness of thermal comfort that outsiders find unusual, and the phrase for a well-run household, onda-ga jal dodda, translates as "the warmth flows right."
Three apertures at hop 7. Constant transit traffic. Three transit hostels, a competent medical facility calibrated for deep-reach travelers, and a market district that stocks items from across the east reach. The system is accustomed to transient populations.
The Eastern Field
The bore survey data that underpins Seongho's energy production projections was last fully audited thirty years ago. Since then, the Thermal Authority's internal monitoring has detected a pattern of declining output yield from the oldest bore installations in the eastern field — a trend that, if it represents structural exhaustion of those thermal sites rather than cyclical variation, implies a reduction in total export capacity within one to two generations.
The Authority's board has access to this trend data. The elected council does not. The general population does not. The Thermal Authority's board meetings are public in general, which the board has sometimes regretted. This particular item is not on the public agenda.
The question of who qualifies as a resident for voting purposes — whether transient populations can vote in the Residents' Assembly — is a standing agenda item that the Assembly has resolved and re-reopened four times in fifty years. The thermal export decline is not.
Practical Information
Seongho is seven hops from Gateway with three gate apertures connecting to Binh Trang, Hwaseong, and Tình Yên. The warmth flows right, in the parts of the system where the Thermal Authority's models show it continuing to flow right. The eastern field is a different conversation.
