Overview
Dunmore sits at the junction of two facts that define its character: it is the last community of any real size before the terminus of the north_reach spur, and it is a through-route that connects Prospect Hill (GJ 402) to Caledonia's End (GJ 95). Both facts are structurally given. Neither has made Dunmore prosperous or strategic; both have made it persistent.
The founding families were Scottish — an Anglophone current within the broader north_reach settlement flow, arriving 300 years ago through a secondary corridor push that followed the earlier wave. They named their system with the direct practicality of people who had been at sea for a long time and recognized a harbor when they found one: Dunmore, from the Gaelic for great fort, or great hill, depending on which tradition you use, and both interpretations have been used at different times without anyone caring enough to settle the matter. The M-type star is dim but stable. The primary body required preparation but proved livable. The mineral survey showed extraction potential — real if not spectacular. They built and stayed.
What Dunmore has developed over 300 years is a working extraction town that has never quite transformed into anything else. Other communities in this corridor have found a second identity — Prospect Hill is now also a transit services node, however contested; Caledonia's End has become something self-contained and idiosyncratic. Dunmore has remained what it started as: a mining settlement with a community on top. The extraction employs roughly a third of the population in direct operations; the rest work in the support structures that a functional community requires. There is a school, several gathering houses, a medical facility that is better than you might expect for its size, and a social fabric built from three centuries of the same family names working the same rock.
The through-route topology means Dunmore sees whatever traffic travels between Prospect Hill and Caledonia's End. That traffic is not much. Caledonia's End is a dead_end — whatever goes there has nowhere to go except back through Dunmore. The volume is local: occasional supply runs, the rare traveler, transit freight for the terminus community. Dunmore's gate infrastructure is functional and unglamorous. There are no commercial hospitality operators oriented toward transit traffic because transit traffic has never justified investment. Travelers who stop here do so because they need to, not because Dunmore has given them reason.
The community's relationship with Prospect Hill is polite and transactional: Dunmore's extraction exports route through Prospect Hill's connection to Ashworth Junction, and Prospect Hill's more recent transit complications have made that routing slightly more expensive and slightly more complicated than it was 40 years ago. Dunmore's assembly has noted this with displeasure. No formal intervention has followed because Dunmore does not have the institutional leverage to make one.
Supply Dependency
Dunmore's extraction exports move through Prospect Hill (GJ 402) to Ashworth Junction and then inward. This two-hop dependency for export access is the community's primary structural vulnerability: anything that disrupts the Prospect Hill connection — institutional disagreement, gate maintenance, political friction between Prospect Hill and Ashworth Junction — affects Dunmore's export revenue without Dunmore having meaningful input into the cause.
Inward supply follows the same route in reverse. The community maintains stockpiles sized for extended disruption; three centuries of corridor experience has produced a practical conservatism about supply chain reliability.
Faction Notes
The Dunmore Miners' Cooperative — the dominant economic institution, as it has been for most of the community's history. Runs the extraction operations collectively, sets production schedules, and has historically been the voice of the community's economic interests in any external negotiation. The Cooperative's senior committee functions informally as a second governance voice alongside the community assembly. Neither body acknowledges the overlap directly.
The Community Assembly — formal governance, 300 years old, based on direct participation by household heads. Has the same institutional weight as the Cooperative but different domain: civic infrastructure, community standards, relationships with neighboring systems. The two bodies agree roughly 80% of the time and negotiate the remainder.
The Caledonia's End Connection — not a formal faction, but a standing interest: several Dunmore families have maintained direct kinship ties to Caledonia's End since the terminus community was founded, and those families have a distinct political posture when questions arise about the through-route relationship. They tend to favor policies that benefit Caledonia's End at some cost to Dunmore's own position. The Cooperative finds this irritating.
Silence Topic
The extraction yields have been declining slowly for 60 years. Not catastrophically — the operation remains viable — but the trajectory is known to the Cooperative's senior committee and not widely discussed outside it. The public framing is that yield variability is a normal part of long-cycle extraction at a mature site. The private framing, in the Cooperative's internal planning documents, uses words like "terminal grade decline." The community has not had a serious conversation about what Dunmore is when the extraction is gone because the Cooperative's committee has consistently assessed that such a conversation, if held, would produce emigration before the timeline actually requires it.
Narrative Hook
A geological survey team on contract from an inward corridor firm has arrived at Dunmore with equipment that is noticeably more sophisticated than anything a routine survey would require, and their contract description — filed with the community assembly as required — describes their work as "secondary resource mapping" without specifying which secondary resources they are mapping or who commissioned the contract.
Calibration Note
The through_route topology with 2 apertures connecting a hop-7 system to both a hop-6 spur_end and a hop-8 dead_end is consistent with Dunmore's position as a pass-through node for a low-traffic terminus spur. The wave_3 settlement is unremarkable for this corridor position. The star designation in the System Profile (K5V) represents a cooler, dimmer star at the M/K boundary — conditions that explain the modest but workable habitable zone and the extraction-focused rather than agricultural founding economy.
