Population

The name comes from the old Angolan port city — Moçâmedes, renamed Namibe in the twentieth century, then renamed again, then remembered by the particular community that left Earth carrying both names and choosing the older one because it was the one their great-grandparents had used. The wave_3 families who settled here three hundred years ago were Angolan-Portuguese, drawn from the same emigration corridor that fed Confluência and Matamba, but arriving a generation later and settling a hop further out. They did not come to build an institution or anchor a corridor. They came because the survey data described a world with extensive subsurface aquifers in a close-orbit zone around an M7 primary, and because the founding cooperative's agricultural engineers believed they could do something with water that no one else in the south_reach was doing at this depth.

GJ 644C is an M7 — one of the dimmest stellar types that hosts a settled community in the south_reach. The light is deep red, barely above the threshold of human visual comfort, and the habitable zone is so close to the star that the primary world's orbital period is measured in days rather than months. The surface is tidally locked: one face permanently starlit, one permanently dark, and the terminator band between them where the weather happens. The aquifers that the founding survey identified run beneath the terminator zone, fed by a hydrological cycle in which atmospheric moisture from the star-facing hemisphere condenses and percolates through fractured basalt on the transition belt. What reaches the aquifers is warm, mineral-rich, and — the founding generation discovered within the first decade — exceptionally well-suited to hydroponic cultivation under controlled conditions.

Estufas de Moçâmedes — the Greenhouses of Moçâmedes — is a descriptive name for a descriptive enterprise. The cooperative operates a network of underground hydroponic facilities tapping the subsurface aquifers, growing produce under artificial lighting calibrated to supplement the M7's dim output. The crops are specialty greens and medicinal herbs: varieties that respond well to the mineral profile of the aquifer water and that command premium prices in the south_reach markets where fresh produce from the outer corridor is rare enough to be noteworthy. The quantities are modest. The quality is not. Confluência's guild restaurants — the ones that care about sourcing — list Moçâmedes greens by name on their menus, which is the kind of recognition that a small outer-corridor producer values more than volume contracts.

The two gates connect inward to Kruger 60 (GJ 860A) and outward to Groombridge 1830 (GJ 451A). The Kruger 60 connection is the primary corridor — Moçâmedes' exports route through Kruger 60's established freight infrastructure and from there toward the inner ring. The Groombridge 1830 connection runs outward to a wave_4 junction that the community uses primarily for receiving technical components rather than for export. The spur-end topology means Moçâmedes has no through-traffic. What arrives here came deliberately.

Three centuries at the end of a spur have produced a community that is introspective without being insular. The population is small — perhaps eight thousand registered residents — and the social texture is that of a place where everyone knows the greenhouse rotation schedule and most people can identify the source aquifer of a given crop by taste. The governance is a cooperative council, inherited from the founding charter, administered with the quiet competence of people who have been running the same operation for three hundred years and whose primary innovation is refinement rather than expansion. New ideas arrive through the Kruger 60 gate with the supply shipments; the community evaluates them against the accumulated knowledge of what works underground at an M7 terminator zone, which is a body of expertise that exists nowhere else.

The Angolan-Portuguese heritage of the founding generation persists in the language, the cuisine, the names of the greenhouse complexes and the aquifer taps. It has been joined, over three centuries, by South African and Mozambican cultural threads carried by immigrants who came through Kruger 60 and stayed. The community's primary social event is the Safra — harvest festival — held when the major greenhouse cycle completes, a celebration that combines the founding families' agricultural traditions with the practical reality that in a community this small, the harvest is everyone's business.


Supply Dependency

Moçâmedes exports specialty greens, medicinal herbs, and a small volume of aquifer-mineral concentrate used in hydroponic operations at other south_reach systems. The Estufas cooperative's distribution relationships run primarily through Kruger 60 and from there into the broader south_reach market network. Imports include technical equipment for the hydroponic infrastructure, supplemental lighting systems, and food staples that the underground growing operations do not produce — grain from Inhambane's distribution network, protein from Várzea's aquaculture exports, both arriving through Kruger 60's freight scheduling. The community's size keeps import volumes modest; the premium pricing on exports keeps the trade balance positive.


Faction Notes

The Estufas Cooperative operates the greenhouse network and holds the aquifer access licenses issued under the original settlement charter. The cooperative's membership is effectively the community's working population; the distinction between the cooperative's governance and the settlement council's governance is real but narrow, the cooperative handling production and trade decisions while the council handles civic infrastructure and the modest public services the community requires. The two bodies share a building and several family connections.

The Kruger 60 Guild Assembly maintains a freight scheduling relationship with Moçâmedes that predates the current generation of logistics coordinators on both sides. The scheduling is handled by convention rather than formal contract — a rhythm of shipments and returns that has been refined over two centuries and that neither side sees reason to formalize because formalization would introduce the possibility of renegotiation.


Silence Topic

The aquifer system that feeds the Estufas cooperative's greenhouse network extends further than the settlement's published geological surveys indicate. The founding generation's original hydrological assessment — filed with the settlement charter and available in the Assembly's wave_3 archive — describes the aquifer as a localized subsurface feature beneath the terminator zone. The cooperative's own geological data, accumulated over three centuries of extraction and monitoring, shows that the aquifer is part of a much larger subsurface hydrological system that extends well into the dark-side hemisphere. What lies beneath the dark side has never been publicly surveyed. The cooperative's position is that the existing aquifer taps provide adequate capacity for the foreseeable future and that dark-side exploration would require capital investment that the community's scale does not justify. The question of what the dark-side aquifer system might contain — and whether the founding generation knew more about it than they reported — has not been pressed.


Narrative Hook

A hydroponic engineer conducting routine maintenance on the deepest aquifer tap has found mineral signatures in the water chemistry that do not match any documented geological profile for the terminator zone — signatures that are consistent with deep-crust contact at a depth the aquifer should not reach according to the cooperative's published geological model.


Calibration Note

M7 is among the dimmest stellar types hosting a settled community in the south_reach, placing Moçâmedes at the extreme end of the M-dwarf habitability range. The close-orbit tidal locking and terminator-zone habitation are standard consequences of this stellar type. The subsurface aquifer hydroponic model is a plausible adaptation for a community that cannot rely on surface agriculture under M7 illumination levels. Wave_3 settlement at hop 5 reflects the outer extension of the third emigration wave along the south_reach corridor, one hop beyond the wave_2 junction at Kruger 60.
