THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — MOÇÂMEDES
MOÇÂMEDES is named for a city that was renamed, then renamed again, with the particular community that settled here choosing the oldest version because it was the one their great-grandparents had used — which, as strategies for preserving identity across interstellar distances, is about as functional as they get.
Underground
GJ 644C is an M7, one of the dimmest stellar types hosting a settled community in the south Reach. The habitable zone is so close to the star that the primary world's orbital period is measured in days. The surface is tidally locked: one face permanently starlit, one permanently dark, the terminator band between them where the weather happens and where eight thousand people have arranged their lives around subsurface aquifers.
The founding agricultural engineers came here because the wave 3 survey described extensive aquifers running beneath the terminator zone, fed by atmospheric moisture condensing from the star-facing hemisphere and percolating through fractured basalt. They were Angolan-Portuguese, drawn from the same emigration corridor as Confluência, arriving one hop further out a generation later. They believed they could do something with that water that no one else in the south Reach was doing at this depth. They were right. The Estufas de Moçâmedes — Greenhouses of Moçâmedes — now operates a network of underground hydroponic facilities tapping the subsurface aquifers, growing specialty greens and medicinal herbs in varieties that respond exceptionally well to the mineral profile of the water. Confluência's guild restaurants list them by name. That is the kind of recognition a small outer-corridor producer values more than volume contracts.
The aquifer system extends further than the published geological surveys indicate. The founding generation's original hydrological assessment described it as a localized subsurface feature. The cooperative's own accumulated geological data shows it is part of a much larger system extending into the dark-side hemisphere. The question of what lies beneath the dark side, and whether the founding generation knew more than they reported, has not been pressed. The cooperative's position is that the existing taps provide adequate capacity for the foreseeable future, which is both true and the kind of statement that is carefully not about anything else.
The Safra
The community's primary social event is the harvest festival — held when the major greenhouse cycle completes, combining the founding families' agricultural traditions with the practical reality that in a community this small, the harvest is everyone's business. The cooperative's membership is effectively the community's working population. The distinction between cooperative governance and settlement council governance exists and is real and is narrow.
Practical Information
Moçâmedes is five hops from Gateway with two gate apertures — spur end connecting to Kruger 60 and Groombridge 1830. Population approximately eight thousand. The community imports grain from Inhambane and protein from Várzea, both through Kruger 60. Three centuries at the end of a spur have produced a community that is introspective without being insular and whose primary expertise — aquifer hydroponic cultivation at an M7 terminator zone — exists nowhere else in the Reach.
