THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — MAVELA
MAVELA means "to be born" in Zulu — in the passive, the way the language constructs something that emerges without a clear agent behind it — and the founding generation chose it because two apertures forming a loop and a world with adequate conditions seemed less like something they had built than something they had found already waiting.
The Yard
The wave 3 settlers arrived from the same Southern African emigration pool that seeded Kruger 60 and Isibaya, but with a different emphasis: not cattle, not arbitration, but mechanical expertise. The kind of practical engineering knowledge that pastoral communities develop when they maintain their own equipment in environments where the nearest external supplier is too far away to be relied upon. At Mavela, this expertise was formalized into a commercial operation within the first century.
Mavela Yard services freight vessels, gate ferry equipment, and agricultural machinery that circulates through the outer south Reach. The loop topology means vessels transiting between Encrucijada and Isibaya pass through Mavela without deviating from their route — the yard is on the way rather than off it. Three centuries of continuous operation have built a reputation for reliable, competent work at prices competitive with inner-ring facilities, which is possible not because Mavela's costs are lower but because the alternative is routing a vessel several hops inward for the same service, and freight operators have done that math.
The yard's service records contain a detailed technical history of every vessel maintained at the facility over three hundred years: structural assessments, system diagnostics, component replacement histories. The yard's management thinks of these as individual service records. Taken as a dataset, they constitute a comprehensive intelligence profile of the outer south Reach's freight fleet. No external body has requested access to the aggregated data. The yard's management has not considered it as a dataset because no one has suggested they should.
The Loop
Two gates, one to Encrucijada's hub and one to Isibaya's junction. Traffic moving in both directions — inward-bound from the outer arc, outward-bound from the inner ring — passes through on a predictable schedule the yard uses to plan its work calendar. The M3Ve primary flares at intervals the community has been tracking for three hundred years and manages through standard hardened infrastructure. The dual-schedule system — one rotation for the long day, one for the long night — is how you run a working community on a tidally influenced world without imposing a 24-hour fiction on a place where the sun moves differently.
Practical Information
Mavela is six hops from Gateway with two gate apertures. The Isibaya Market Liaison coordinates livestock transport scheduling during Umkhosi wa Sika season, sustaining the social connection between two communities that share Southern African heritage and have been neighbors for two and three centuries. Assembly presence is minimal. Compliance is maintained because it costs less than the alternative. Governance runs through the yard.
