THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — MARKTFELD
MARKTFELD means "market field," which is the most honest name in the western corridor, given by founders who were traders before they were settlers and saw no reason to pretend otherwise.
The Field
The original cargo-handling facility became a trading district. The trading district became a settlement. The settlement has been organized around commercial exchange for two centuries, which is not a transformed economic identity so much as an identity that arrived pre-formed and then aged. The M4 dwarf provides dim light and the geothermal activity that gives the habitable world its unusual thermal profile: warm, humid growing conditions that produce food without the artificial supplementation most M-dwarf worlds require. The founders were lucky in this. They did not name the system after the luck.
Marktfeld is the second-to-last stop before Lichtung, a dead-end system further out. Everything reaching Lichtung passes through here first, which creates the system's commercial purpose: the transit tax on outbound cargo, the storage and handling fees, the service businesses that accumulate around any waypoint. Not wealth, but the kind of functional steady income that a market-oriented community knows how to turn into something livable.
The Handelsgilde
The Handelsgilde predates the Commission post that was eventually established here to log customs for the Lichtung route. It handles cargo brokerage, trader dispute arbitration, and rate-setting for the storage facilities. The Commission post handles formal compliance documentation. The two bodies cooperate in the way that an older institution and a newer one cooperate when the older one still does most of the actual work.
The pricing arrangements between the Handelsgilde and certain Hansestadt-based trading houses are believed to include incentives not reflected in the official rate schedule. This belief is widespread among independent operators who transit through Marktfeld and has never been formally investigated, which is the normal outcome for widely-held beliefs about Hansestadt's commercial relationships in the outer west.
There is a cargo shipment in the bonded warehouse that has been waiting eleven months for Commission clearance. No one on either end is pressing for resolution. The Commission officer here has developed opinions about why this might be that he has not shared with his supervisors.
Practical Information
Marktfeld is six hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Lichtung and Hansestadt. The market is open. Rates are negotiable. The warehouse has space.
