Overview

Greymantle is the name the founders gave the world, and it is the name the world deserves. The primary body is wrapped in a persistent atmospheric haze — fine mineral particulate suspended in a thick nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere that never fully settles. The K7V star, already cooler and dimmer than the Sun, is reduced by the haze to a pale disc that casts diffuse light without sharp shadows. The landscape is grey. The sky is grey. The horizon, on clear days, is a slightly different shade of grey. The founders, arriving 400 years ago in Wave 2 from Ashfield (GJ 178), looked at what they had found at the end of a single gate and named it with the precision of people who had learned, at Ashfield, to describe exactly what they saw.

The connection to Ashfield is the defining relationship. GJ 178's volcanic ash plains and ceramic economy sit one gate inward; Greymantle extends that geological character into a different register. Where Ashfield's ash is deposited by active volcanism, Greymantle's particulate is ancient — the remnant of a geological era that ended long before human arrival, suspended in the atmosphere by persistent low-altitude winds that circulate across flat terrain with nothing to break them. The world is geologically dead. Its atmosphere is geologically alive. The haze is what happens when wind has nothing to do but move dust.

The founding party was Australian-English in heritage — part of the same Commonwealth-inflected stream that settled much of the north_reach, though by hop 6 the cultural signal is fading into something more locally defined. They came to Greymantle because Ashfield's through-route character did not suit them. They wanted a terminus, not a waystation. What they found at the terminus was a world with one immediately useful property: the atmospheric particulate, when collected and processed, yields a mineral powder with exceptional properties as a filtration medium.

Greymantle filter powder is the system's sole significant export. The material — a naturally occurring aluminosilicate with a pore structure that cannot be economically replicated through synthesis — is used in atmospheric processing equipment, water purification systems, and industrial filtration applications across the outer north_reach. The collection process is simple: atmospheric precipitators mounted on the settlement's roof structures gather particulate continuously, which is then graded, processed, and packaged for export. The settlement runs its precipitators the way other communities run their farms — as infrastructure so fundamental to daily life that it has become invisible.

The population is approximately 600 permanent residents, making Greymantle one of the smaller inhabited systems in the north_reach. The community has the insular character common to dead-end settlements at high hop distance, compounded by the atmospheric conditions that make outdoor activity unpleasant for anyone without respiratory adaptation. Long-term residents develop a tolerance for the particulate that visitors do not share; the standard-issue filtration masks that newcomers wear are a visible marker of outsider status that the community notes without comment.

Four centuries of living in perpetual grey has produced a local aesthetic that visitors find either beautiful or oppressive. Interior spaces are brightly lit and intensely coloured — the compensation for exterior monotony. Greymantle's domestic interiors, by reputation, are among the most carefully decorated in the outer north_reach: painted walls, dyed textiles, coloured glass. The contrast between the grey exterior and the vivid interior is the system's most distinctive cultural expression. People who grow up here learn to make their own light.

Supply Dependency

Greymantle depends entirely on Ashfield (GJ 178) for manufactured goods, food supplements beyond local greenhouse capacity, and technical equipment. The single-gate dependency is mitigated by filter powder's consistent demand: Ashfield's ceramic industry uses Greymantle powder in kiln filtration systems, creating a reciprocal trade relationship that gives both communities incentive to maintain the gate connection. Agricultural production under greenhouse conditions — the atmospheric particulate makes open-air agriculture impractical — covers roughly 60% of caloric needs. The remainder is imported from Ashfield, which in turn sources from Singh's Landing and the inward corridor.

Faction Notes

The Precipitator Collective — Greymantle's governing body and primary economic institution. Manages the precipitator network, grading standards, and export logistics. All permanent residents hold membership; governance is by annual assembly with a three-person executive committee handling day-to-day operations. The Collective's current chair, Dorothy Greymantle-Chen, has held the position for 12 years and is widely regarded as competent enough that no one has bothered to challenge her.

The Colour Society — an informal cultural institution that curates the community's interior decoration traditions. Maintains a shared pigment library, sponsors apprenticeships in dyeing and glasswork, and organises the annual Colour Festival, which is Greymantle's only significant community event. The Society has no formal governance role but wields cultural authority: a household whose interior decoration is assessed as uninspired faces social consequences that are subtle and persistent.

Silence Topic

The atmospheric particulate density has been gradually increasing over the past century — a trend so slow that it is only visible in the Precipitator Collective's long-term monitoring data. The current generation's filter powder yields per precipitator are approximately 15% higher than the generation before. This is commercially advantageous in the short term. The Collective's internal environmental assessment, however, notes that if the trend continues at its current rate, atmospheric visibility will degrade to levels that make surface navigation without electronic assistance unreliable within 200 years, and greenhouse growing conditions will deteriorate within 80. The assessment has been filed internally. The Collective has not shared it with Ashfield or with any external body because the immediate commercial implications — increased yields — are positive, and the long-term implications are someone else's problem.

Narrative Hook

An atmospheric scientist from Ashfield has been comparing Greymantle's precipitator yield data against Ashfield's own volcanic deposition records and has noticed that the particulate composition in Greymantle's recent exports contains trace minerals that do not match the system's published geological profile — suggesting either that the atmospheric source is changing or that the published profile was never complete.

Calibration Note

The header classification reads M-type; the READ-ONLY star data is K7V, which sits at the boundary between K and M spectral types. The M-type header reflects the broader tier classification placeholder. The world described here — persistent atmospheric haze, dim diffuse light, geologically inactive — is consistent with K7V conditions. Wave_2 dead_end settlement at hop 6 is plausible for a daughter colony established from Ashfield by settlers who preferred isolation to through-route traffic.
