THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — GREYMANTLE
GREYMANTLE is what happens when you take people from Ashfield — a community that names things for what it sees — and send them one gate further into a world made entirely of grey, and they name it accordingly.
The Grey
The primary body is wrapped in a persistent atmospheric haze: fine mineral particulate, ancient, suspended by persistent low-altitude winds that circulate across flat terrain with nothing to break them. The K7V star, already cooler and dimmer than the Sun, is reduced by the haze to a pale disc that casts diffuse light without sharp shadows. The landscape is grey. The sky is grey. The horizon, on clear days, is a slightly different shade of grey. The founders looked at what they had found and named it with the precision of people who had learned, at Ashfield, to describe exactly what they saw.
This is also commercially useful. The atmospheric particulate, when collected and processed, yields a mineral powder with exceptional properties as a filtration medium — a naturally occurring aluminosilicate with a pore structure that cannot be economically replicated through synthesis. The settlement runs its precipitator network the way other communities run farms: as infrastructure so fundamental to daily life that it has become invisible. Filter powder ships to Ashfield's ceramic kilns and to water purification and industrial filtration applications across the outer north arc.
The precipitator yields have been approximately 15% higher per unit than the previous generation. The Collective's internal environmental assessment notes that if the atmospheric particulate density continues increasing at its current rate, greenhouse growing conditions will deteriorate within 80 years and surface navigation without electronic assistance will become unreliable within 200. The assessment has been filed internally. The immediate commercial implications — increased yields — are positive, and the long-term implications are someone else's problem.
The Interior
Four centuries of living in perpetual grey has produced a local aesthetic that compensates deliberately. Interior spaces are brightly lit and intensely coloured. Painted walls, dyed textiles, coloured glass. The Colour Society maintains a shared pigment library and curates the community's interior decoration traditions with social authority that has no formal governance basis and does not need one. A household whose interior decoration is assessed as uninspired faces consequences that are subtle and persistent.
The contrast between the grey exterior and the vivid interior is the system's most distinctive cultural expression. People who grow up here learn to make their own light.
Practical Information
Greymantle is six hops from Gateway at the end of a single gate connecting to Ashfield. Population approximately 600. The reciprocal trade relationship — filter powder outbound, agricultural and technical goods inbound — gives both communities incentive to maintain the gate connection. Filtration masks are visible outsider markers. Long-term residents have developed respiratory adaptation. The annual Colour Festival is worth attending.
