THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — CLEARWATER STATION
CLEARWATER STATION was named for what its founders found — groundwater of measurable and unusual purity — and has since become the corridor's leading source of knowledge about how to produce that quality in environments where it does not occur naturally, which is either a logical extension of the original asset or a community that found out the hard way that knowing how to fix a problem is more exportable than having a problem that does not exist.
The Water Economy
Wave_2, hop 7, Anglo-Australian founding community, practical in self-presentation. The K0V primary provides light without excessive UV loading. The atmosphere is low-particulate. The geological strata filter the surface hydrology. The first settlers' assay results were described as "improbably clean." That description has been the foundation of the system's commercial identity for four hundred years.
The irony arrived within the first century: Clearwater's water purification expertise is most valuable in systems where water is difficult. Pressurized recycling environments, long-duration transit vessels, outer reach settlements without reliable hydrological resources. The community that started by having clear water became the community that knows more about cleaning contaminated water than anywhere else in the east reach. The Water Sciences Institute, the Applied Hydrology Cooperative, and the Clearwater Hydroponic Research Station collectively employ twelve percent of the working population and publish research cited in applied engineering contexts across the corridor.
The Forty-Year Trend
The Water Sciences Institute has maintained environmental monitoring protocols for the primary aquifer system since its founding. Four hundred years of groundwater chemistry records. The full unfiltered dataset has never been released publicly. The published annual summaries do not reflect a multi-decade trend in one specific mineral group — not contamination, but natural depletion — that the Institute's models suggest will, within a century, alter the measurable character of Clearwater's water in ways that undermine the "improbably clean" claim that grounds the system's commercial identity.
The Institute has known about this trend for forty years. The council has not been informed. The commercial licensing dispute between the Institute and the Applied Hydrology Cooperative over who controls jointly developed methods — thirty years of contested review cycles — has been the visible surface of institutional tension whose deeper layer is the question of who controls the information the Institute is not publishing.
Practical Information
Clearwater Station is seven hops from Gateway with two gate apertures connecting to Lam's Prospect and Novaya Zarya. The community's unusual awareness of its own timeline — residents can usually say what their great-great-grandparents were working on — extends to the monitoring records, which have been maintained continuously and are considered a cultural asset as much as a scientific one.
