Stilmark — a German-Scandinavian compound meaning "quiet border" — is a dead-end system at the back of Altmark's (GJ 357) commercial hub. Its single gate looks directly into the busiest commercial junction in the outer west. The system has been there for three hundred years, close enough to hear the traffic and far enough to have decided, generation by generation, not to join it. What Stilmark is not — a corridor through-route, a commercial participant, a political actor in the Compact debates that animate Altmark's governance — is almost as much its identity as what it is.

The F9IV primary is a subgiant — a star past the middle of its main-sequence life, running warmer and somewhat larger than when it formed. The classification means Stilmark receives more stellar energy than most systems on this corridor, and the primary habitable world, called Stille by residents, has a warm temperate climate across most of its mid-latitude bands. This is not the dim, cold existence of the corridor's red dwarf systems. Stilmark has genuine warmth, reasonable growing seasons, and the kind of planetary environment that settlers find livable rather than merely survivable.

The paradox of Stilmark's character is that a genuinely comfortable habitable world behind a dead-end gate has produced not expansion and development but deliberate self-containment. The wave_3 founding cooperative came here knowing they were choosing a terminus. They came because they wanted a terminus. Two centuries of watching Altmark grow into the corridor's second major commercial hub just one gate away has not changed this. The single gate is a filter. Traffic that has no specific reason to visit Stilmark does not visit Stilmark. The community that resulted from three hundred years of that filter is not an accident.

Supply Dependency

Stilmark's supply relationship runs entirely through Altmark (GJ 357). There is no alternative commercial route. This dependency is the dominant economic fact of the system's existence — every import, every export, every commercial interaction passes through Altmark's gate scheduling office and Altmark's merchant assessments. The terms of that transit have varied across the three centuries. Currently, Altmark's commercial council applies a transit margin that Stilmark's cooperative considers extractive but has no practical means to contest.

The local economy is mixed agricultural and light processing. Stille's climate supports productive cultivation without extensive greenhouse infrastructure, and the surplus feeds the local population without imports. This agricultural self-sufficiency in food reduces but does not eliminate Stilmark's dependency: manufactured goods, technical components, energy systems infrastructure, and medical supplies all come from Altmark. The cooperative has spent decades trying to develop local manufacturing capacity sufficient to reduce these imports. Progress is slow. Manufacturing at the scale needed requires capital, and capital formation requires the kind of commercial surplus that Altmark's transit margins consistently absorb.

MVG has no contract presence in Stilmark. MVG's logistics corridor goes through Eisentor and the spur systems to Altmark's east; the Stilmark dead-end is outside that footprint.

Stilmark's governance is a cooperative founded on the original wave_3 charter, amended four times but maintaining continuous institutional identity. The governing council is nine seats, all elected from residential districts, with no reserved seats for commercial interests — the founding charter explicitly excluded corporate-weighted representation on the grounds that the cooperative would not be large enough or commercially complex enough to require it. After three hundred years this judgment has proved correct. The council's primary activity is internal resource allocation, dispute resolution, and the ongoing negotiation of commercial terms with Altmark.

The relationship with Altmark is the council's most persistent governance challenge. Altmark's commercial council holds the effective pricing power over everything Stilmark imports and exports. The political dynamics in Altmark — the ongoing Compact debate, MVG's structural seats, the Assembly trade delegate — are distant from Stilmark's concerns but directly shape the terms the cooperative faces every commercial cycle. When Altmark's commercial council becomes more favorable to the outward corridor systems, Stilmark's terms improve. When Altmark's internal politics swing toward core interests, the margins tighten. Stilmark has no representation in any governance body that can affect this.

Assembly authority is nominal. The wave_3 charter included commercial registration with the Assembly because the founding cooperative needed Assembly transit rights to access the gate that the Gate Corporation managed. That registration remains active. It has no practical governance meaning.

Stilmark's position on the Compact of Westphalia is the most genuinely ambiguous of any system in the outer west. The cooperative has sympathy for the Compact's principles — autonomy, mutual recognition, freedom from Assembly assessment pressure — but is physically located behind Altmark's gate, which means any formal Compact alignment would require Altmark's commercial cooperation to implement. The cooperative has twice sent observers to Compact formation discussions and twice returned without committing. The calculus is straightforward: if Altmark stays outside the Compact, Stilmark's Compact membership achieves nothing and costs commercial goodwill with its only supply partner.

The local astronomical observation office has been tracking the stellar evolution parameters for sixty years and has produced a dataset showing that Stille's habitable zone will begin shifting outward within approximately two hundred years — still within the habitable range for longer than anyone alive will care, but at a rate that will become meaningful within three to four generations. The observation office filed its assessment with the cooperative council seventeen years ago. The council acknowledged receipt and has not convened a discussion. The observation office's lead scientist, who wrote the assessment, retired twelve years ago. No one has updated the dataset since.

Narrative Hook

A genuinely comfortable world chosen for deliberate isolation three hundred years ago has never resolved the question of what it is for — and the astronomer who calculated that the comfortable climate has a shelf life of two centuries is dead, and no one has checked the numbers since.

wave_3 at hop 7 dead_end is consistent with deliberate terminus settlement — the founding cooperative came knowing the topology and chose it. The F9IV classification is accurate; the subgiant warmth distinguishes Stilmark from the corridor's typical dim-star systems. dead_end with one gate to Altmark is accurate.
