THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — STILMARK
STILMARK means "quiet border," which describes both the system's geography — one gate, looking directly into Altmark's five-gate commercial hub — and the institutional choice the founding cooperative made three hundred years ago and has been maintaining by inertia and genuine preference ever since.
The Proximity
The F9IV primary is a subgiant, warm and generous enough that the primary habitable world, Stille, has genuine growing seasons across most of its mid-latitude bands. This is not the dim, cold existence of the corridor's red dwarf systems. Stilmark has warmth. The paradox of the system's character is that a genuinely comfortable habitable world, positioned one gate away from the western corridor's second major commercial hub, has produced not expansion and development but deliberate self-containment.
The wave_3 founders came knowing they were choosing a terminus. They came because they wanted one. Two centuries of watching Altmark grow into the corridor's second major hub has not changed the fundamental premise. The single gate is a filter. Traffic with no specific reason to visit Stilmark does not visit Stilmark. The community produced by three hundred years of that filter is not an accident.
The Dependency
Everything comes through Altmark. Imports, exports, every commercial interaction. Altmark's commercial council applies a transit margin that Stilmark considers extractive. Stilmark has no practical means to contest it. The agricultural self-sufficiency in food reduces the dependency; manufactured goods, technical components, energy infrastructure, and medical supplies reduce it back. Capital formation for local manufacturing requires commercial surplus; Altmark's transit margins absorb commercial surplus. This cycle has been running for three hundred years.
Stilmark's Compact of Westphalia position is the corridor's most genuinely ambiguous. The cooperative has sympathy for the principles. But formal alignment would require Altmark's commercial cooperation to implement, and Altmark is not in the Compact. Twice Stilmark sent observers to formation discussions. Twice they returned without committing. The calculus is straightforward: if Altmark stays outside the Compact, Stilmark's membership achieves nothing and costs the goodwill of its only supply partner.
The F9IV primary is expanding. On astronomical timescales. The habitable zone will begin shifting outward within approximately two hundred years — still comfortable within any current planning horizon, but meaningful within three to four generations. The observation office filed an assessment with the council seventeen years ago. The council acknowledged receipt. The assessment's lead scientist retired twelve years ago. No one has updated the dataset.
Practical Information
Stilmark is seven hops from Gateway with one aperture connecting to Altmark. Stille is a pleasant world to visit if you can get there. Altmark's scheduling office manages that.
