THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — BAKSHI SPUR
BAKSHI SPUR carries the name of a surveyor who went out on a branch of the western corridor to examine what was at the end of it, found refractory minerals of commercial value, and inadvertently founded a system that has been named after his navigation note ever since.
The Minerals
Refractory minerals are the kind of thing that MVG notices. The K2V star's habitable zone hosts elevated concentrations of the specific material used in precision heat-shielding components, which is a narrow need with consistent demand, and MVG secured a long-term materials contract in the founding generation that has outlasted everything else about the original settlement except the name.
The founding Bakshi family left two centuries ago — absorbed into the broader west_reach population through the normal mechanisms of migration and marriage and economic opportunity elsewhere. The corporate council that governs the system still has MVG holding a permanent seat under the terms of the original contract. The residential bloc holds the remaining seats. This is the arrangement: MVG has the minerals and the contract; the residents have the democratic representation and the environmental regulations they have been using to constrain the worst extraction practices. Neither side has found a better arrangement. Both sides periodically wish they had.
The Geology
MVG's internal geologists have updated their projections of the viable deposit lifetime twice. The local council's version of the geological survey, which forms the basis of the system's development plan, dates from thirty years ago. The council has requested an updated survey. MVG has described the request as pending review.
The internal projection, which the council has not seen, estimates approximately eighty years of economically viable extraction at current rates. The contractual framework gives MVG the right to exit the contract when extraction falls below a minimum commercial threshold. The council's governance authority over a system built around a single extractive resource — with a single corporate partner holding the contract, the geological data, and the exit provision — depends on the mining continuing. When it stops, the institutional architecture that the residential bloc uses to constrain MVG stops mattering.
Whether anyone on the council has worked through this logic is not a question the council's public record answers.
Practical Information
Bakshi Spur is six hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to GJ 1232 and Kraków Junction. The K2V star is warm enough to be comfortable. The Bakshi family's descendants live elsewhere in the corridor and are not, as far as anyone knows, aware that their grandfather's navigation note is still the system's name.
