THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — BRENNAN'S DRIFT
BRENNAN'S DRIFT was named for Cormac Brennan, who filed the first mineral survey, founded the consortium, and created a succession dispute so thorough it took three generations of legal argument to resolve — which is, in mining history, a perfectly respectable legacy.
The Ore
A drift is a horizontal tunnel into an ore body. The founding generation chose functional vocabulary over aspiration, which was appropriate to the occasion and has remained appropriate for three hundred years of consistent extraction. The volume is not large by inner-corridor standards. But ore concentrations that have supported continuous mining for three centuries have a weight that high-volume-boom systems never achieve, because those systems exhaust themselves and Brennan's Drift has not.
The ore leaves through Ross 154. The goods come back through Ross 154. This was not always the case — the Ross 154 junction activated later, and for a long time the routing went the longer way inward — but the new connection created a supply chain relationship with Ross 154's processing consortiums whose terms have not yet hardened into something irrevocable. The cooperative council is aware of this window.
The Cooperative
The succession disputes that fragmented Cormac Brennan's original company produced, eventually, a cooperatively owned successor entity, which is a more elegant outcome than most three-generation legal arguments achieve. The cooperative model has persisted ever since, not because it was imposed but because it emerged from genuine negotiation and nobody subsequently had the energy to replace it.
The founding family's descendants still hold significant shares. They have been holding significant shares for three hundred years, and some of them have been present for most of that period. They have also been acquiring shares from current-generation holders who value liquidity over governance stakes, at prices that reflect the buyers' knowledge of the cooperative's long-term trajectory better than the sellers' does. The cooperative's share transfer mechanism requires that shares be offered to the general pool before external sale. It does not regulate what one member can charge another. The audit committee reviews the accounts. The membership register is a different document.
The Irish founding heritage appears in the council procedures more than in the population, most of which arrived through three centuries of mining recruitment that cared about labor availability and nothing else. The name is still Brennan's. The procedures still borrow from Irish cooperative legal traditions. The founding family is still buying back in. These facts coexist without anyone formally connecting them.
Practical Information
Brennan's Drift is four hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Ross 154 and Neustadt. MVG holds a supply contract for processed metals that dates to the Wave 3 period. The council regards this as a structural feature of the system's economic life, which is the correct way to regard a mountain.
