THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — SONGJIANG
SONGJIANG is one of the oldest systems in its part of the corridor, settled before the east_reach's character fully solidified, and has developed the particular quality of very old institutions in a moderately old context: it has relationships with the Assembly that have passed through multiple complete cycles of proximity, friction, and managed distance, and at this point the two parties understand each other well enough to be polite without either party expecting the other to change.
The Two Worlds
Primary is the administrative and commercial center — temperate, industrially self-sufficient, universities and professional associations and a local press worth reading. Secondary is an agricultural world with a cooler climate, a population that is per capita more conservative and culturally homogeneous, and less interest in Assembly politics than its sister world. The tension between these populations is the durable background note of Songjiang's political life. Primary's population advantage continues to grow. Secondary's bloc retains enough votes to block constitutional amendments. This has been the situation for the fifth renegotiation of the Dual Council's representation structure, which is currently pending.
The spur extension to GJ 423A was developed in Songjiang's third century, when the population had grown large enough to want expansion options. GJ 423A's residents identify more strongly with Songjiang than with any other system, which Songjiang simultaneously benefits from and resents in the way that a larger party in an asymmetric relationship tends to find the dependency both flattering and inconvenient.
The Original Claim
Wei Songjiang's settlement-priority filing from the wave_2 expansion period — and the correspondence between her survey team and the Wave_2 Expansion Authority about the terms of that claim — are held in the Wei Foundation's restricted archive. The Foundation describes the restricted materials as legally sensitive due to ongoing descendant rights questions.
What other period correspondence suggests those documents contain is a dispute about whether the survey team discovered evidence of prior habitation in the system and how that evidence was classified. A private letter Wei Songjiang wrote to her sister, which survived in a separate archive, describes finding "something in the third orbit that cannot have been natural." This phrase does not appear anywhere in the official documentation. No court has yet compelled disclosure of the restricted materials.
The Wei Foundation charges for archival access and does significant business with academic researchers.
Practical Information
Songjiang is six hops from Gateway with two gate apertures connecting to Marunong and Jinghu. The Assembly Coordination Office has six staff who handle documentation, petition routing, and what they carefully describe as "facilitative oversight." The local government is polite to them. The food production from Secondary supplies export markets through Jinghu. The pine-river the name refers to has been there since wave_2 and remains accurately described.
