THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — SUỐI VÀNG

SUỐI VÀNG means "golden spring," named before the founders had been in the system long enough to develop restraint, which is the tradition for naming discoveries that immediately suggest their value and which has the benefit of accuracy: the spring ore deposits are what the community is built on, and the community is built on them for sixty to ninety more years, give or take, depending on which set of numbers you are using.

The Wirework

The quặng suối ore — a copper-gold alloy formed under geological conditions that exist in commercial concentrations only here — has a warm rose color that shifts differently in direct and indirect light, and under the G3/G5V star's warm output appears to glow faintly from within. The artisanal metalwork tradition called dây vàng draws it into fine-gauge wire and forms open-lattice structures with tools that leave deliberately visible marks. The tool marks are not defects. They are evidence of the maker's hand and are part of what the work is.

The scale is intimate: earrings, arm cuffs, hair ornaments. Three-dimensional open-lattice forms designed to function under varying light conditions simultaneously. This takes time to learn and is not easily automated. Collectors at Kaelong know the name, and through Kaelong the work has moved to hop-6 and hop-5 markets at the pace that genuine craft reputations build: slowly, through actual objects passing between actual people.

The Suối Vàng Wireworkers' Association controls quality certification through community practice rather than corridor-level trademark — in a small community where everyone knows whose workshop produced what, this is more effective than the legal alternative. The Association's authority exceeds that of any formal governmental body on most questions that matter.

The Deposit Maps

The Ore Extraction Cooperative has conducted deep-survey work over thirty years of permit operations. The internal maps show a finite volume of accessible ore: at current extraction rates, sixty to ninety years of deposit remain. The Cooperative's board has held this information internally since the mapping was complete. The Wireworkers' Association has been negotiating multi-decade plans on the assumption of indefinite extensibility. A young geologist completing a survey contract for the Cooperative has been given access to the internal mapping data. She has been asked to sign a confidentiality agreement.

Practical Information

Suối Vàng is eight hops from Gateway with one gate aperture connecting to Kaelong. The Suối Board handles infrastructure and gate operations. The food is adequate. The wirework is excellent and available in small quantities in Suối District's workshops. The rose-warm color is genuinely unlike what is produced anywhere else.
