THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — GJ 616
GJ 616 is a system that every assessment concludes would be settled at a shorter hop distance, which is the kind of conclusion that is accurate and useless simultaneously.
The Problem Is Not the World
The K-type primary is adequate. The habitable world meets settlement criteria: breathable atmosphere, stable geology, acceptable water distribution, no significant biological hazard. The transit connections to GJ 853A and GJ 903 give the corridor sensible topology. The world is fine.
At hop eight, GJ 616 would have attracted farming families and idealists before the first decade passed. At hop twelve, every proposal does the same math and reaches the same conclusion: the logistics of supplying a founding cohort over that distance defeat the attempt before it achieves self-sufficiency. A founding cohort needs to bring enough to establish themselves before they can produce enough to sustain themselves. At hop twelve, the supply chain for that initial period is expensive, slow, and vulnerable to disruption across eleven intervening transit hops. The risk is not the world. The world is fine. The risk is the gap between arrival and viability, and who absorbs the cost of spanning it.
Nobody has proposed a mechanism for absorbing that cost. Every proposal has identified the gap and filed the conclusion. The archive contains the conclusions. The world is still there, meeting its parameters.
Practical Information
GJ 616 is twelve hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to GJ 853A and GJ 903 (Errai). No services are available. The habitable world has been assessed as settlement-worthy and determined to be settlement-distant. The gap between those two conditions is the settlement history.
