Dunkelholz

GJ 615 | K-type | west_reach

Dark wood. The name was practical before it was poetic: the primary world's temperate zones are covered in dense coniferous forest, the K0V star giving sufficient light for growth but not enough to open the canopy the way a hotter star would. Three hundred years of settlement have not changed this materially. Dunkelholz was settled for its timber, and it has been producing timber ever since.

The founding community came during the Wave 3 expansion, branching off from Eisfeld (GJ 3586) at a time when the west_reach corridor's construction demand was outpacing supply from inner systems. The forests of Dunkelholz's primary world offered a solution that was simple and immediate: a planet covered in structural-grade timber with a manageable gravity and no competing resource claims. The settlers came to log it, and they did, and then they stayed.

Three centuries of extraction have reshaped the primary world in ways that are visible from orbit. The old-growth zones still stand in the upper latitudes and in the elevated interior ranges where access is difficult and the economics of extraction become marginal. The lower-latitude and coastal zones have been harvested and replanted multiple times. Dunkelholz timber management is not simple clearcut and replant — the founding families had enough forestry expertise to understand that an extraction system that depleted its only resource was building itself a death sentence. The current harvesting regime involves carefully managed rotation zones, selective harvesting in old-growth adjacencies, and replanting programs that are now producing the third generation of deliberate cultivar selection. The forests are not what they were. They are productive in a way that natural forests are not.

The K-type star's orange-red light gives the world a distinctive atmospheric color — sunsets and sunrises extend across a broader spectrum than the corridor average, and the ambient daylight under overcast conditions has a warm, amber quality that settlers from other systems find striking. It also affects the timber itself: the local tree analogues have adapted over evolutionary time to the K-star's light spectrum, and their cellular structure produces a characteristic fine-grained density that carpenters across the west_reach have learned to specify by name. Dunkelholz-grade structural timber carries a premium in markets where the application requires both load-bearing capacity and workability.

Being at the end of a one-aperture dead-end spur means that everything in Dunkelholz depends on Eisfeld. This is a constraint that the community has internalized to the point of preference — Dunkelholz residents tend to be privately suspicious of any proposal that involves increasing outside connectivity, because the history of single-aperture systems is that outside connectivity means outside interests, and outside interests eventually want to renegotiate terms. The current terms are: Dunkelholz timber moves through Eisfeld's transit authority, Eisfeld takes its service fee, and everyone inward gets their wood. The community has no particular interest in complicating this arrangement.

The social character is shaped by the physical environment in ways that visitors always remark on. The primary settlements are built into and around the forest rather than cleared for it — partially for aesthetic reasons, mostly because the timber industry produces an abundant local building material and the architecture reflects four centuries of people who know how to build in wood. The settlement districts have a layered, complex spatial character: buildings at ground level, elevated walkways threading through the canopy, processing facilities integrated into natural topography. It is very quiet by corridor standards. Dunkelholz residents have noticed that people from busy systems often find the quiet unsettling for the first few days and then find it difficult to leave.

Supply Dependency

Dunkelholz exports structural timber, processed lumber, and value-added wood products — cabinetry, precision-cut components for habitat construction, specialty items for inner-corridor buyers who want the aesthetic quality of genuine Dunkelholz grain. Imports are the full complement of a resource-export economy: manufactured goods, medical hardware, food supplements, technical equipment. The dependency on Eisfeld as the single transit point is total. Everything in and out goes through GJ 3586. The community keeps strategic reserves sized for roughly three years of disruption, which is longer than anyone expects to need but shorter than anyone feels comfortable with.

Faction Notes

No faction presence. The timber cooperatives function as the effective government in the way that Xa Voire's agricultural cooperatives do, but Dunkelholz's system is older and has gone through more internal contestation — the second century saw a significant conflict between the original founding families, who held the old-growth harvesting rights, and the replanting generation, who argued that those rights were depleting the long-term productive value of the primary world. The resolution produced the current harvesting regime and the current governance structure: a cooperative council with equal representation for extraction rights holders and replanting program participants, with a mandatory long-range planning commission whose assessments have legal force on harvesting decisions. The old family names still appear on the council but they no longer dominate it.

Silence Topic

What is not discussed openly: the old-growth zones in the upper latitudes. Three hundred years of avoiding the most inaccessible terrain has left large sections of the primary world substantially uncharted at ground level. Survey data exists at the orbital and aerial scale. Ground-level mapping of the deep interior is sparse. The harvesting cooperatives know this and have no particular commercial interest in the upper-latitude zones — the access economics are wrong and the timber there is old enough that extraction would require justifications that the long-range planning commission would not easily approve. What nobody has confirmed is whether the upper latitudes are simply difficult terrain or whether they contain something that makes them difficult in a more specific sense. Three expeditions have gone into the deep interior over the course of a century. Two returned with unremarkable data. The third returned early and filed a report that described equipment failures and navigation difficulties and did not describe anything else.

Narrative Hook

Calibration Note

K-type header matches the K0V stellar classification. Dead-end topology at wave_3 is consistent: Dunkelholz was settled as a resource system on the Eisfeld spur, not as a corridor node. Wave_3 timing places the founding approximately three hundred years ago, consistent with the construction demand context described. One aperture only — the connection to Eisfeld, nothing outward.
