THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — MOSSBANK
MOSSBANK is at the end of a dim corridor through an unsettled binary system, which means you have to want to be there, and the community has spent forty years sorting people into those who want to be there and those who meant to keep going.
The Surprise Star
The route to Mossbank runs through GJ 3988, an unsettled K-M binary that provides navigational complexity and nothing else. At the other end: a G-type primary — bright, warm, yellow-white — sitting at the end of this dim corridor like a door left open in a dark hallway. The habitable world has a broad temperate zone. The light is genuinely different from the red-shifted corridors of the Cairn pocket chain. Settlers who arrived in the past forty to a hundred years found a world that required less artificial lighting, less vitamin supplementation, and less agricultural engineering than the M-dwarf worlds behind them. The moss-covered slopes that gave the system its name grow without assistance. This is the thing that settlers in dim-star systems say carefully, as if they do not want to invite correction.
The community has developed strong local repair and maintenance culture because the replacement for anything broken is three weeks out through an unsettled binary. You fix what you have.
The Prior Claim
A family arrived eighteen months ago claiming to be descendants of the original survey team, carrying documents that would establish a land claim predating the current settlement charter. The council has been quietly ignoring them. The survey data suggests alternative corridors to Mossbank existed and were not pursued — that the current route through GJ 3988 was a specific choice rather than the only option. Nobody local knows why. The question is considered rude to ask, implying the founders had something to hide.
Whether the documents are genuine has not been formally tested. Whether the council intends to test them is unclear.
Practical Information
Mossbank is seven hops from Gateway at the end of a single gate beyond GJ 3988. The Scottish heritage of the founding community runs through place names and informal dispute resolution structures that predate the formal charter. The Commission knows the system exists. It does not have a representative stationed here. Supply runs from Athabasca route through the unsettled binary on three-week cycles. Strangers are memorable at a dead end.
The G-type light is genuinely lovely after the corridor.
