Overview
Harrowfield was not supposed to be permanent. The founding expedition — a Gate Corp forward survey team in Wave 3 — established a base camp at this dead-end spur off Carrington's Post (GJ 250A) to conduct a geological assessment of the primary body's mineral potential. The assessment was completed in six months. The survey team's report concluded that the mineral deposits were present but sub-commercial: too dispersed for efficient extraction, too far from any processing hub to justify the transport costs. Gate Corp filed the report, classified the system as low-priority, and reassigned the survey team.
Three of the surveyors did not leave.
Margaret Harrowfield, the team's senior geologist, and two junior colleagues stayed behind under a homestead claim — a provision in the settlement charter that permitted survey personnel to claim residential rights in systems they had assessed, provided they could demonstrate self-sufficiency within two years. Harrowfield could. She had spent six months studying the primary body and understood its character better than the report's economic conclusions suggested. The world was not valuable for what could be extracted from it. It was valuable for what could be grown in it.
The M0 star — the warmest class of red dwarf — provides enough illumination for photosynthesis without supplemental lighting, a rarity in the outer north_reach's M-dwarf systems. The primary body's surface is composed of deep regolith over ancient volcanic substrata, and the regolith has a specific mineral composition that Harrowfield's geological training allowed her to recognise: it is almost precisely the profile that Earth-origin timber species require, with the addition of nitrogen-fixing microbial amendments that the survey team had brought for soil testing and that Harrowfield repurposed for cultivation.
Harrowfield planted trees. That first planting — six seedlings of cold-adapted Scots pine, carried in the survey team's biological sample kit — is now a forest. Three hundred years of deliberate silviculture have produced a managed woodland covering roughly 40 square kilometres of the primary body's temperate zone. The species mix has diversified: pine, larch, a birch variant adapted to the M0 light spectrum, and several experimental plantings of hardwoods that are still being evaluated in their third generation. The woodland is Harrowfield's economy, its identity, and its reason for existing at the end of a single gate.
Timber is rare in the outer north_reach. Most M-dwarf systems cannot support arboreal growth without prohibitive energy inputs for lighting and heating. Harrowfield's M0 star sits at exactly the threshold where managed forestry becomes viable without subsidy — a narrow window that the founder recognised and that three centuries of careful management have exploited. The timber products that ship through Carrington's Post serve a specific and otherwise unmet demand: cooperage stock for Calloway Reach's distilleries, structural timber for habitat construction in systems that have nothing to build with, and increasingly, decorative wood for communities wealthy enough to value a material that most of the outer reach has never touched.
The community has grown to roughly 800 permanent residents, most of whom are involved in some aspect of the forestry operation. Harrowfield has the unhurried character of people who work on generational timescales — a tree planted today will be harvested by someone not yet born, and the planting decisions reflect that awareness. The culture is patient, proprietary about the woodland, and mildly suspicious of visitors who do not understand what it costs, in time and attention, to grow a forest under a red star.
Supply Dependency
Harrowfield depends on Carrington's Post (GJ 250A) for manufactured goods, technical equipment, and the specialised forestry tools that the community cannot fabricate locally. Food production is locally sufficient — the same soil conditions that support the woodland support conventional agriculture in cleared plots, and the M0 star provides adequate growing light. Timber products ship outbound through Carrington's Post; the most significant ongoing trade relationship is with Calloway Reach (GJ 3325), which sources cooperage wood from Harrowfield through the corridor. This trade is Harrowfield's primary revenue source and Calloway Reach's primary source of cask-quality timber — a mutual dependency that has developed over approximately 200 years and that neither party could easily replace.
Faction Notes
The Harrowfield Forestry Trust — the governing body and land management institution. Structured as a trust rather than a cooperative, reflecting the founder's conviction that the woodland should be managed for long-term sustainability rather than short-term cooperative returns. The Trust holds all forestry land in perpetuity; residents have cultivation rights but not ownership. The current chief forester, Callum Harrowfield-Ndaba, is a fifth-generation descendant of the founder and takes the hereditary stewardship obligation seriously enough that his children have been trained in silviculture since they could walk.
The Timber Merchants' Circle — a small association of the traders and logistics operators who manage Harrowfield's export operations. Has periodic tensions with the Trust over harvesting schedules: the merchants want to increase output to meet growing demand from Calloway Reach; the Trust maintains that harvesting rates are set by the woodland's regeneration capacity, not by the market's appetite.
Gate Corp Records Office — Gate Corp maintains a nominal interest in Harrowfield through its original survey filing. A small records office — unstaffed, accessed remotely — holds the original geological survey data. The homestead claim that Harrowfield filed is, technically, still subject to Gate Corp review under a provision that has never been exercised and that most legal scholars consider expired by custom if not by statute.
Silence Topic
The Forestry Trust's internal ecological monitoring has detected a fungal pathogen in the birch stands at the woodland's northern margin — a slow-moving infection that has killed approximately 200 trees over the past five years. The pathogen does not appear to affect pine or larch, but the birch component of the woodland provides critical windbreak and soil-stabilisation functions. The Trust has not disclosed the pathogen to external trading partners or to Carrington's Post because the immediate timber supply — predominantly pine — is unaffected, and public disclosure would risk contract renegotiations at a moment when the Trust is negotiating a long-term supply agreement with Calloway Reach.

Calibration Note
The header classification reads F-type; the READ-ONLY star data is M0, the warmest class of red dwarf, sitting at the boundary between M and K spectral types. The F-type header reflects the broader tier classification placeholder rather than the precise spectral type. The world described here — regolith-over-volcanic substrate, photosynthetically viable under natural starlight — is consistent with M0 conditions. Wave_3 dead_end settlement at hop 5 is consistent with a homestead claim by a survey team that recognised value the official assessment missed.
