THE DRIFTER'S GUIDE TO THE REACH — RØDVIK
RØDVIK means "red bay" in Norwegian, named for the reddish geological outcroppings visible under a dim stellar light that makes red the dominant color in most of what the eye encounters here.
The Tidal Economy
The M5 red dwarf provides almost nothing useful in terms of solar generation. What it provides instead, by pulling at a primary habitable body in a close orbit, is tidal flexion — the constant kneading of geological stress that produces the geothermal heat that Rødvik's energy cooperative has been extracting and converting to portable fuel cells since Wave 5 settlement. The deep-sky solar panels that other systems depend on are absent. The geothermal wells run deep and hot, and the fuel cells that emerge from them have found a reliable market in the outer corridor's communities that share the same low-light problem.
The Wave 5 settlement is recent enough that the Assembly still provides infrastructure development grants. The grants arrive through Neustadt's regional development office, which creates a financial dependency the local council finds politically uncomfortable and economically essential — the council regards the Assembly primarily as a funding body, which is autonomist thinking arriving by the practical route rather than the ideological one.
The Projection
The geothermal cooperative's engineering team has run the orbital mechanics. The primary habitable body's orbit is drifting, very slowly, in a direction that reduces tidal heating by an estimated twelve percent over the next two centuries. Two hundred years is not urgent. It is not an emergency. It is the kind of long-term problem that sounds abstract until you have personally built your settlement's entire economy on the resource it concerns.
The cooperative's internal projections are classified as proprietary technical data. The development grant documents submitted to the Assembly describe the resource as "long-term stable," which is technically accurate — two centuries of slow decline is a different thing from imminent failure — and practically misleading in the context of infrastructure investment decisions that will still be operational when the decline becomes significant. The Assembly revised its assessment of Rødvik's development trajectory upward three years ago, based on projections the cooperative quietly revised downward the same year. Both documents exist in different filing systems. Neither office has compared them.
Practical Information
Rødvik is six hops from Gateway with two apertures connecting to Neustadt and GJ 231. The Bergen-heritage lead geologist who named the system is long dead. The red geological outcroppings are still red. The fuel cells are still good. The orbit is still slowly, quietly shifting.
